After School Program Support Worker

POSITION

Under the direction of the Recreation Manager, the After-School Program Support will assist with the delivery of recreation and youth programs for children ages 5-12. Working directly with children on the floor, this position will support activities, games, and group programming while helping create a safe, inclusive, and engaging environment. The successful candidate will build positive relationships with participants, encourage participation, assist with activity set-up and clean-up, and provide support to children as needed. This position may also support programs delivered in partnership with organizations such as Right To Play.

Employment Type

Permanent part time, 17.5 hours per week, Monday-Friday 2:00pm-5:30pm

Probation Period

3 months from the date of hire.

Education Required

High school diploma or equivalent.

Experience Required

2 years of childcare experience.

Overtime Status

Non-exempt.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Provides oversight in the planning, development, implementation and delivery of all programs and activities for children aged 5 to 12 within the After School Program, with sixty percent of the activities being physical.

Assists in program planning by assessing community needs through community engagement, surveys, feedback forms and parent participation engagement.

Ensures a safe, comfortable, and welcoming environment for children and youth providing age-appropriate activities with adaptations as needed.

Assist with set up and clean up from all activities while maintaining the space in a clean state.

Observe youth's interactions and promote the spirit of cooperation and kindness.

Identify behavioral problems and assist in determining the right course of action.

Responsible for the Recreation cellphone, ensuring clients are updated and that calls are being answered and responded to.

Encourages participants and parents to take the initiative to stay active in the after-school program so they can carry forward positive behaviors.

Promotes behavioral change and personal growth of children and youth who are having difficulties coping because of social, emotional, physical, or cognitive delays.

Maintains awareness of community resources and gaps, as well as the socio-economic and geographical make-up of the community.

Ensures all necessary supplies are in place to successfully implement the planned activities.

Assists with special projects, activities, events, fundraising, and researching funding opportunities for programs and activities.

Participates in field trips designed to incorporate education.

Prepares and submits regular monthly activity reporting to Right-to-Play if need be.

Records daily attendance log, statistics, and evaluated programs and activities at the end of each month if need be.

Creates a safe and healthy environment where facilities are regularly secured, well-maintained, and clean.

Assists in communication and public awareness efforts for programs and events.

Knowledge

Experience with direct program and service delivery.

Experience in the areas of child and youth care, fitness, social and other leisure activities.

Skills And Abilities

Ability to think critically and act logically to evaluate situations, solve problems and make decisions.

Ability to take directions and work independently.

Excellent interpersonal skills.

Ability to apply sound judgment and make decisions within the area, often on short notice.

Ability to prioritize, multi-task and organize work effectively and under pressure.

Exceptional familiarity with technology and remote desktop applications (MS Teams, Zoom, Outlook, etc.)

WORKING CONDITIONS

Intermittent physical activity including walking, standing, sitting, and lifting.

May deal with youth who can, from time to time, be demanding and challenging. Must be able to remain patient and committed to the activities and may have to engage in conflict resolution or crisis management at times.

May have to manage several tasks at one time, while supervising the youth.

Noise levels may escalate during activities, events and outings.

May be required to work in various temperatures within the facility and outside.

To be aware of sensitivity, confidentiality and urgency of requests while balancing other work commitments.

Non-standard hours of work – May be required to accommodate the community needs and that may consist of evenings and weekends.
