Job Title: Air Safety Investigation Technical Manager

Working Pattern: Full Time

Working location: Bristol – will require frequent overseas travel

The Air Safety Investigation team is responsible for safety investigations relating to Rolls-Royce products. Team members lead internal investigations in support of the Company’s safety management processes and also support investigations into Accidents/Serious Incidents led by state entities, for example the UK Air Accidents Investigation Branch and the National Transportation Safety Board in the USA. The investigator’s role involves everything from on-site wreckage examination following an accident, to engine disassembly in a workshop and analysis of event data. The UK ASI team supports UK-designed military products, Civil Large Engines products and Business Aviation/Regional products.

An exciting opportunity has arisen to join this small, dynamic team as the Technical Manager. The ASI Technical Manager is responsible for ensuring that the output of the ASI team meets the highest quality standards. They are responsible for developing ASI methods and processes, and for providing support and guidance to Air Safety Investigators in the team. In addition, the ASI Technical Manager is expected to conduct their own safety investigations.

What you will be doing:

Managing the technical output of the ASI team to ensure investigation outcomes remain world-class.

Ensuring the robustness of investigations through the application of the ASI gated review process and ensuring the delivery of root cause understanding.

Identifying and promoting investigation best practices and procedures throughout the Air Safety Investigation team.

Leading and taking technical responsibility for a team of investigation engineers, influencing and directing them to realise their full potential and developing their investigation abilities.

Reviewing and approving Air Safety Investigation reports.

Conducting complex engineering investigations of accidents and serious incidents, ensuring that personal investigation skills remain current.

Ensuring that the Head of Air Safety Investigation and other senior company personnel are advised of any Product Safety concerns or significant investigation findings.

Building and maintaining a network of professional relationships with internal stakeholders and across the wider Air Safety Investigation community globally.

Maintaining a developed understanding of customer/partner/supplier and other strategic relationships from a safety investigation perspective.

Identifying any Health, Safety or Environmental hazards that may result from the investigation of Rolls Royce products.

Degree in Engineering or equivalent.

Recognised by a relevant professional institute e.g. Member of the Royal Aeronautical Society.

Accredited as a professional engineer e.g. Chartered Engineer or equivalent.

Experienced in application of the Company's Product Safety processes, and of completing complex Root Cause Analysis investigations.

Awareness of procedures for managing significant events based on internal process and external protocols (additional training can be provided as required).

Wide ranging, whole-system knowledge of Rolls-Royce products and operation of these products in service.

Competent in technical report writing.

Experience of product design and verification processes, and an understanding of manufacturing, inspection and quality processes, techniques and procedures would be advantageous.

Full Driving Licence essential.

This role requires an individual to hold a UK MoD Security Check clearance. Rolls-Royce will support the application for Security Clearance if you do not currently already have this in place. Due to the nature of work the business conducts and the protection of certain assets we can only progress applications from individuals who are a UK national or, in MoD approved cases, a dual national.

The nature of safety investigation work means that the role requires frequent overseas travel, often at short notice and sometimes for an unknown duration.
