Are you interested in helping build something genuinely new in architectural education?

The TMCC School of Architecture is seeking a full-time faculty member to join its growing five-year professional Bachelor of Architecture program in Reno, Nevada. TMCC is home to the first five-year B.Arch. offered at a community college in the United States and is currently in Continuing Candidacy with the National Architectural Accrediting Board (NAAB), with an Initial Accreditation visit planned for Fall 2027.

Our School combines the accessibility and student-centered mission of a community college with the rigor of professional architectural education. The 150-credit B.Arch. is built around design studio, technology, history and theory, environmental systems, structures, professional practice, fabrication, research, and thesis. The curriculum places particular emphasis on the high desert and alpine West and on issues including healthy communities, climate resilience, wildfire, water scarcity, rapid regional growth, emerging technology, and community/culture-centered design.

We are looking for a faculty member who wants to help shape the School, not simply teach within it. The successful candidate will play a significant role in Year 3 of the curriculum, where design increasingly engages building tectonics, materials, assemblies, environmental and structural systems, fabrication, documentation, and the realities of making architecture.

The Reno-Tahoe region offers an exceptional setting in which to live and teach, with immediate access to Lake Tahoe, the Sierra Nevada, skiing, mountain biking, hiking, climbing, paddling, and extensive public lands, alongside a growing metropolitan community with strong connections to design, technology, construction, and the architectural profession.

The successful candidate will initially teach architecture courses primarily at TMCC's William N. Pennington Applied Technology Center, 475 Edison Way in Reno, with the teaching location moving to the new home for the School of Architecture at 555 Reactor Way in the 27-28 school year.

Minimum Qualifications

• •Bachelor of Architecture degree from a NAAB-accredited institution and two (2) years of full-time practice experience in a professional architectural workplace.
• •Demonstrated expertise in building tectonics, including the relationship between architectural design, materials, assemblies, construction methods, building systems, and the physical realization of design intent.
• •Strong proficiency with current architectural design and production technologies and demonstrated ability to engage emerging technologies. This should include experience with contemporary design and visualization software and digital fabrication hardware such as laser cutters, 3D printers, CNC equipment, or more emerging fabrication technologies.

Preferred Qualifications

• •Master of Architecture degree from a NAAB-accredited institution.
• •Prior experience teaching at the college level.
• •Professional architectural licensure or progress toward licensure.
• •Experience integrating digital fabrication, computational design, advanced visualization, or emerging technologies into architectural design education or professional practice.

Academic Responsibilities

Teaching and workload assignments are scheduled throughout the calendar year and may require evening and weekend obligations at one or more College locations.

• •Teach 30 (15/15) credit or contact hours during the academic year, August through May, in various modalities as assigned, including in-person, hybrid, online, and live-virtual (hy-flex), per the needs of the program.
• •Serve as a Year-Level Coordinator, coordinating academic efforts within a specific year of the five-year architecture program. Work collaboratively with studio, seminar, technical, and part-time faculty to strengthen course delivery, assignment coordination, reviews, assessment, and student progression.
• •Provide leadership in the teaching and continued development of building tectonics within the curriculum, including relationships among design intent, materials, assemblies, structural and environmental systems, construction methods, detailing, fabrication, and building performance.
• •Remain actively engaged with evolving approaches to building technology and tectonics and demonstrate a strong interest in continued learning, experimentation, research, and innovation in this area.
• •Support student learning through hands-on digital and physical fabrication using technologies that may include laser cutting, additive manufacturing/3D printing, CNC fabrication, digital modeling, scanning, prototyping, and other emerging tools and processes.
• •Participate in the continued development of the School's fabrication resources, helping faculty and students connect digital design processes to physical making, prototyping, material experimentation, detailing, and full-scale investigation.
• •Participate as an active member of the School of Architecture Program Leadership Council and contribute to vertical coordination across the five-year curriculum.
• •Assist with the NAAB accreditation process by providing input and actively participating in regular meetings, accreditation planning, evidence collection, curriculum mapping, student-work documentation, Architecture Program Reports, and accreditation reviews or site visits as appropriate.
• •Support student learning outcomes assessment processes by teaching toward approved student learning outcomes and assessing student performance. Participate in year level assessment, review of assessment results, and implementation of improvements based on those results.
• •Maintain representative examples of assignments, assessment materials, and student work necessary to document course, program, and NAAB learning outcomes.
• •Assist with curriculum and program review, revision, and assessment. Aid in the development of new course materials and innovative instructional techniques that improve student learning.
• •Participate in coordinated review of course syllabi, assignments, learning outcomes, prerequisites, and curricular relationships within the faculty member's assigned year level and across the B.Arch. sequence.
• •Work closely with department peers and administrators to become an effective teacher and contributing member of the academic unit.
• •Work collaboratively with faculty and technical staff in the safe and effective use of digital-production, fabrication, printing, computing, and instructional resources. Faculty are expected to understand and appropriately incorporate these resources into coursework but are not expected to serve as the primary facility technician or shop manager.
• •Mentor new part-time faculty and support their integration into the School's curriculum, assessment practices, communication systems, and learning and teaching culture.
• •Participate in studio reviews, critiques, portfolio reviews, exhibitions, and other School-wide academic events.
• •Participate, as assigned, in third-year B.Arch. admissions, portfolio review, transfer or preparatory-education review, and other student-progression processes.
• •Participate in department activities such as advisory boards, industry partner visits, program review, inventory, and outreach events.
• •Contribute to relationships with practicing architects, professional organizations, alumni, community partners, transfer partners, fabricators, manufacturers, contractors, and others who can contribute to student learning and professional development.
