The Assistant Director of Texan Outfitters provides strategic and operational leadership for the university's textbook and retail operations. The assistant director provides strategic leadership and daily operational oversight for all textbook sales, course materials, branded merchandise, apparel, online sales, retail locations, mobile retail operations, and sales at university events. Provides leadership and operational oversight for bookstore operations, customer service operations, online retail operations, and related retail services through subordinate management and supervisory staff.

The Assistant Director is accountable for financial performance, budgeting, revenue growth, inventory, purchasing, merchandising, e-commerce, retail technology, staffing, customer service, compliance, and the protection of university assets. The position works closely with faculty, academic departments, students, campus partners, publishers, distributors, vendors, Athletics, Marketing and Communications, and university licensing representatives to ensure Texan Outfitters meets academic, operational, and customer needs. Serves as Campus Security Authority (CSA).

Standard work hours are Monday through Friday from 8 AM to 5 PM. Evening, weekend, holiday, and adjusted hours are required when dictated by peak textbook periods, athletics, commencement, orientation, special events, inventory activities, or other operational needs.

Responsibilities :

Supervises and develops departmental leadership staff, including bookstore management, customer service supervision, and online retail supervision.

Directs operations through subordinate supervisors and managers to ensure achievement of financial, operational, customer service, and strategic objectives.

Lead and oversee all Texan Outfitters operations, including textbooks, retail, e-commerce, mobile sales, and events.

Supervise, develop, and schedule staff to ensure effective service and cross-training.

Manage course material adoption, forecasting, purchasing, pricing, and availability.

Direct merchandise planning, purchasing, pricing, and inventory for retail products.

Oversee inventory control, fulfillment, returns, loss prevention, and physical inventories.

Manage point-of-sale, e-commerce, payment systems, reporting, and operational technology.

Ensure compliance with university, state, procurement, licensing, and payment-security requirements.

Build and maintain relationships with publishers, vendors, distributors, and campus partners.

• •Monitor financial, sales, inventory, and customer service performance to drive results.
• •Lead retail operations for athletics, commencement, orientation, and other university events.

Develop strategic goals, policies, procedures, and service standards for bookstore and retail operations.

Identify opportunities to increase revenue, reduce costs, improve services, and support university initiatives.

Minimum Qualifications

Required Education and Experience:

• •Bachelor’s degree or equivalent combination of education and experience.
• •Six years of related experience.

Preferred Experience:

Experience managing textbook and course material operations in a higher education environment.

Experience overseeing retail operations, licensed merchandise, e-commerce, and other sales channels.

Experience managing inventory systems, point-of-sale technology, and financial analysis to support operational performance.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Strong leadership and team management skills with the ability to supervise and motivate staff.

Effective communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work collaboratively with diverse stakeholders.

Demonstrated ability to manage multiple priorities in a dynamic environment while maintaining a high level of professionalism.

Ability to handle sensitive and confidential information with discretion.

Clear and articulate written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to present information to various audiences.

Compensation & Benefits

Salary: Commensurate with experience

Salary Range:

The target base annual salary range is $72,870 up to $103,481 and may be negotiable based on funding availability and candidate experience/skillset in relation to the minimum requirements of this position.
