Summary

This position is located at the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), Response and Recovery, Response Directorate, Disaster Emergency Communication Division, Denton MERS Detachment in Denton, Texas. The ideal candidate for this position will have experience perforoming overhaul/repair work on vehicles powered by internal combustion engines to include commercial/industrial use vehicles such as trucks, trailers, forklifts, and multi-wheel drive vehicles.

MERS positions are in the excepted service. Employees will not acquire civil service status but will have standard and optional benefits. EMERGENCY ASSIGNMENT: Every FEMA employee has regular and recurring emergency management responsibilities, though not every position requires routine deployment to disaster sites. All positions are subject to recall around the clock for emergency management operations, which may require irregular work hours, work at locations other than the official duty station, and may include duties other than those specified in the employee's official position description. Travel requirements in support of emergency operations may be extensive in nature (weeks to months), with little advance notice, and may require employees to relocate to emergency sites with physically austere and operationally challenging conditions. In this position, you will work as a Automotive Mechanic (Diesel) responsible for providing support for the FEMA Response Directorate. Typical duties include: Performing field-level overhaul/repair work on chassis group units of different types of vehicles powered by internal combustion engines to include commercial/industrial use vehicles such as trucks, forklifts, and multi-wheel drive vehicles with automatic and manual transmissions and auxiliary equipment. Using a variety of shop/test equipment to correctly diagnose and perform needed repairs. Maintaining maintenance and service logs and orders supplies and equipment necessary for vehicle maintenance. Performing periodic Preventive Maintenance on all vehicles and equipment, repairs fuel tanker pumping units, repairs vehicle air conditioning units, repairs brake systems, steering and suspension systems, cooling systems, and repairs or replaces vehicle tires, etc., to assure all systems are operational. Operating a wide variety of shop and test equipment, e.g., engine analyzers, acetylene torch, engine hoists, drill presses, oscilloscopes, volt/ohm meters, compression gauges, special feeler/dial gauges, and air conditioning repair equipment. Qualifications

The qualification requirements listed below must be met by the closing date of the announcement. Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Federal Wage System Qualification Standard. Qualification requirements emphasis is on the quality of experience, not necessarily the length of time. Working Conditions: The work setting may vary from a properly equipped repair shop to an excessively hot, cold, windy, or wet outdoor environment. Hazards including high voltages, noxious fumes, sharp or abrasive objects, excessive noise, toxic substances, and slippery surfaces are likely to be encountered and 1lncumbent must follow stringent safety regulations Physical Effort: Incumbent must be capable of working effectively in a high-stress disaster environment, sometimes under less than desirable weather and living conditions, 7 days a week, 12 or more hours a day, for up to 30 days. The incumbent is required to under go periodic physical examinations to satisfy the Commercial Driver's License requirements in the state of residence. Incumbent must be able to lift weights up to 45 pounds and be physically and mentally capable of performing all tasks and duties associated with a mechanic in a disaster response organization. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional, philanthropic, religious, spiritual, community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment.
