Thunder Rocks Federal is seeking an experienced Bat Specialist/Wildlife Biologist to support federal natural resource management and environmental compliance programs. The successful candidate will conduct bat surveys, threatened and endangered species assessments, habitat evaluations, environmental compliance support, and technical reporting for federal clients.

This position requires extensive fieldwork, scientific analysis, and preparation of regulatory documentation supporting compliance with the Endangered Species Act (ESA), National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA), Sikes Act, and other environmental regulations.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

Conduct bat inventory and monitoring surveys using accepted federal and state protocols.

Perform mist-netting, harp trapping, acoustic monitoring, and emergence surveys.

Identify bat species through visual assessment and acoustic data analysis.

Conduct habitat assessments for federally listed, candidate, and sensitive species.

Prepare technical reports, biological assessments, survey summaries, and environmental documentation.

Support NEPA documentation, ESA consultations, and natural resource management planning.

Coordinate with federal agencies, installation personnel, state wildlife agencies, and project stakeholders.

Maintain detailed field notes and ensure quality assurance of biological data.

Assist with Geographic Information Systems (GIS) mapping and spatial analysis.

Support environmental permitting and compliance efforts.

Travel frequently to project locations throughout the southeastern United States and other regions as required.

Required Qualifications

Education

Bachelor's degree in:

Wildlife Biology

Conservation Biology

Ecology

Environmental Science

Zoology

Natural Resources Management

Related biological science

Experience

Minimum 3 years of experience conducting wildlife or natural resource surveys.

Documented experience conducting bat surveys and species identification.

Experience with threatened and endangered species programs.

Experience preparing technical biological reports for federal or state agencies.

Preferred Qualifications

Master's degree in Wildlife Biology, Ecology, or related discipline.

Experience supporting Department of Defense (DoD), NAVFAC, USACE, USFS, NPS, BLM, or other federal agencies.

Demonstrated experience with:

Indiana Bat surveys

Northern Long-Eared Bat surveys

Tricolored Bat surveys

Gray Bat surveys

Southeastern bat species monitoring

Experience with acoustic analysis software such as Kaleidoscope, SonoBat, or Bat Call Identification.

GIS proficiency using ArcGIS or ArcGIS Pro.

NEPA and ESA compliance experience.

Required Certifications and Training

Valid driver's license with acceptable driving record.

Current or previous federal/state bat handling authorization preferred.

Ability to obtain installation access and pass federal background screening.

Current CPR/First Aid certification preferred.

Physical Requirements

Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions.

Ability to hike over uneven terrain, wetlands, forests, and remote locations.

Ability to carry up to 40 pounds of field equipment.

Ability to work extended hours, including night surveys and overnight travel.

Ability to climb, bend, stoop, and navigate challenging field environments.
