Job Title:

Biostatistics Student Assistant-PT-MIND Center Research

Job Summary:

Collates, formats, derives, and cleans data in preparation for analyses. Under faculty guidance, performs statistical and data science analyses of all levels (basic, intermediate, and advanced) and provides computer programming for laboratory, clinical, and population health research projects. Provides visual and tabular summaries of data analyses for oral presentation and written dissemination to collaborators and the scientific community.

Education & Experience

Bachelor's degree in mathematics, statistics, biostatistics, analytics, data science, or directly related field and enrollment in the M.S. or Ph.D. program in Biostatistics & Data Science at UMMC.

Certifications, Licenses or Registration Required : NA

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

Skills in experimental or study design, multiple regression, longitudinal data analysis, survival analysis, logistic regression, categorical data analysis, clinical trials methodology, statistical genetics, artificial intelligence, and Bayesian methods preferred. Requires knowledge of programming languages such as R, SAS, Stata, and Python.

Responsibilities

  • Under faculty guidance, analyzes data using biostatistical or artificial intelligence techniques such as multiple regression, longitudinal data analysis, survival analysis, logistic regression, categorical data analysis, clinical trials methodology, statistical genetics, artificial intelligence, and Bayesian methods. Learns new statistical or data science methods as needed and apply new skills to future projects.
  • Under faculty guidance, designs data analysis set specifications, actively collating, formatting, and cleaning the data. Combines multiple disparate raw databases and derives analysis variables accurately. Writes analysis code, finding and correcting errors and validating output and results. Demonstrates understanding of research project data collection processes and data sets, and shares knowledge with collaborators.
  • Generates results and creates visual and tabular summaries of analyses for dissemination to collaborators or the scientific community. Provides oral presentations of statistical or technical scientific information to inform and report on the progress of research studies and prepares written reports.
  • Serves in a supporting or leading role for research projects, with consultation or assistance as needed. Demonstrates understanding of how related tasks contribute to the role of the research team on the project. Attends team meetings when appropriate and participates in the statistical/data science team responsible for designing and validating analysis data sets, programs, and output products. Accomplish project responsibilities with faculty supervision.

  • Requires occasional exposure to biohazardous conditions such as risk of radiation exposure, blood borne pathogens, fumes or airborne particles, and/or toxic or caustic chemicals which mandate attention to safety considerations, occasional work produced subject to precise measures of quantity and quality, frequent bending, occasional lifting and carrying up to 75 pounds, occasional crouching/stooping, occasional kneeling, occasional pushing/pulling, frequent reaching, constant sitting, frequent standing, occasional twisting, and occasional walking. (occasional-up to 20%, frequent-from 21% to 50%, constant-51% or more).
