Sounds great – what’s the role in a nutshell?

The Deckhand is an essential member of the deck department, responsible for the general maintenance, cleanliness, and safe operation of the vessel's exterior and key equipment. Reporting directly to the Bosun and First Officer, this role maintains the highest standards of safety, exterior presentation, and professionalism at all times.

Key Responsibilities & Core Duties

Vessel Maintenance & Exterior Detailing

Execute daily wash-downs, chamois drying, and polishing of all exterior surfaces, including the superstructure, hull, stainless steel, and teak decking.

Perform varnishing, painting, and brightwork as directed by the Bosun, maintaining the vessel’s immaculate luxury presentation.

Manage waste and garbage disposal in strict compliance with MARPOL regulations and company environmental standards.

Assist the engineering department with basic watchkeeping routines or operational checks as required.

Watchkeeping, Navigation & Safety

Perform alert deck watchkeeping duties while the vessel is at anchor or underway, immediately reporting any changes, traffic, or hazards.

Act as lookout and helmsman during navigation as assigned by the Officer of the Watch.

Participate fully in all onboard emergency drills, including fire, man overboard, and abandon ship procedures.

Inspect and maintain safety equipment (fire extinguishers, life rafts, lifejackets) to ensure complete operational readiness.

Deck Operations, Tenders & Water Sports

Assist with mooring and anchoring operations, including line handling, fender deployment, anchor work, and rope splicing.

Safely operate, clean, and maintain tenders, skiffs, and water sports equipment (kayaks, paddleboards, jet skis, etc.).

Ensure the safe, organized, and orderly storage of all deck equipment, inventories, and guest gear.

Guest Service & Hospitality Support

Provide professional, warm, and discreet service to guests during transfers, water sports activities, and excursion setups.

Assist guests with luggage handling and boarding/disembarkation safely.

Maintain a professional appearance, clean uniform, and positive conduct at all times as a representative of Aqua Expeditions.

What are we looking for?

Mandatory Certifications:

Valid STCW Basic Safety Training (STCW 95/2010 regulations).

Valid ENG1 (or equivalent recognised Seafarer Medical Certificate).

Designated Security Duties (STCW A-VI/6-2) or Security Awareness.

Experience & Licences:

1 to 3+ years of previous experience as a Deckhand on commercial passenger vessels, luxury expedition ships, or yachts.

Navigational Watch Rating (STCW II/4) or Yacht Rating certificate is preferred.

Powerboat Level 2 or equivalent commercial tender driving licence is highly desirable.

Technical Skills & Competencies:

High-standard exterior detailing skills (washing, waxing, buffing, teak care, brightwork).

Proficient in seamanship: line handling, knot tying, splicing, anchoring, and mooring procedures.

Solid experience operating and maintaining guest tenders and water sports equipment.

Fluent in English (spoken and written).

Excellent physical fitness, agility, and ability to work long hours outdoors in varying weather conditions.
