Job Description:

National Geographic is looking for a creative Digital Visuals Editor to join our team. This role is responsible for creating original illustrations and photo editing for digital platforms. They will also commission and art direct assignments, with some opportunities to work on the magazine and special projects. They should be comfortable working both independently and collaboratively on teams.

The ideal candidate will have a strong visual eye and a portfolio demonstrating deep knowledge of both illustration and photography. They should have sound editorial judgement and enthusiasm for working in a fast-paced environment on daily coverage and digital features. A detail-oriented mindset is essential to ensuring that all work meets National Geographic’s visual, production, and editorial standards.

We are looking for a strong conceptual thinker who can bring a distinct visual point of view and creative approaches to visual storytelling for a wide variety of story formats and topics, including National Geographic’s core subject areas of wildlife, history, nature, science, and travel.

Responsibilities:

• •Conceptualize and execute visual solutions for publication across platforms
• •Research, curate, and license photography for all publishing platforms
• •Commission photographers and illustrators for story assignments
• •Manage deliverables, assets, and workflows, including ensuring accurate caption information, verifying credit lines, archiving, and transmitting images, working with pre-press on color correction, and checking image veracity.

Basic Qualifications:

• •Minimum 3 years of experience as an illustrator, art director, and/or photo editor
• •Proven art direction and visual editing skills
• •Brings network of editorial contributors
• •Strong visual judgement of illustration and photography trends
• •Creative, proactive, and independent thinking
• •Mastery of design tools (Adobe Creative Cloud and Figm)
• •Clear and concise communication skills
• •Close attention to detail and the ability to multitask

Preferred Qualifications:

• •Experience in editorial or journalism
• •Deep understanding of digital and social platforms
• •Experience with moving images and motion graphics

Required Education:

Bachelor’s Degree

Preferred Education :

Journalism or Art Degree

The hiring range for this position in Washington, D.C. is $79,400 to $106,400 per year. The base pay actually offered will take into account internal equity and also may vary depending on the candidate’s geographic region, job-related knowledge, skills, and experience among other factors. A bonus and/or long-term incentive units may be provided as part of the compensation package, in addition to the full range of medical, financial, and/or other benefits, dependent on the level and position offered.
