Overview:

The Practicum Advisor (PA) position is largely focused on connecting the learning in EDBE 8F01, the foundational courses associated with year 1, to the field of practice by supporting the development of teacher candidates as culturally responsive and competent practitioners. Practicum Advisors (PA) will use the log of professional practice in alignment with materials covered in 8F01 to engage students in conversations on educational inclusion and equity and pedagogy. PAs are expected to be aware of a variety of critical practices relevant to their field/subject area that can support all students, attend to unconscious biases (both self and teacher candidate), and encourage inclusivity.

You will also work with associate teachers (ATs) and respond to ATs correspondence in a timely manner.

Some of the duties described below are generic. Details for specific courses will be discussed during the hiring process.

Duties:

The duties and nominal hours for an Education Instructor – Practicum Advisor are established by the employer. The nominal workload includes scheduled contact time with students as well as non-contact time. Duties may include collaboration with associate teachers and principals, meeting students in-person or on-line, marking / grading, attending program meetings and completing mandatory training as required.

Become familiar with Brock University policies and adhere to them.

Complete required Brock instructor’s online tutorial prior to first class.

Complete required Gender and Sexual Violence supports for teacher candidates training.

Use a provided Brock email address for all Brock-related communications with teacher candidates and program personnel.

Effectively deliver all aspects of the course, including using online platforms, and virtual meetings for communication.

Manage instructional contact time and non-contact time according to the requirements outlined in the practicum advisor requirements and Log of Teaching Practice. Due to the nature of this course, flexible work hours are essential.

Adapt instructional and assessment strategies to accommodate diverse learning needs, including liaising with Student Accessibility Services as required for specific students.

Advise, mentor, and provide feedback to teacher candidates in relation to course concepts/content and Professional Standards of Practice and Ethical Standards of the OCT.

Work collegially and collaboratively with other instructors, course team lead(s) including attending team meetings and debriefings.

Mentor teacher candidates for practicum placements (P/J/I) with reference to the Teacher Education Practicum Handbook.

Coach/mentor teacher candidates and work with associate teachers.

Respond to associate teacher’s correspondence in a timely manner.

Participate, as warranted, in the Program’s referral procedures as outlined in the Teacher Education Practicum Handbook.

Communicate on email to support teacher candidates

Evaluate teacher candidates during the practicum.

Submit final grades by deadlines.

Qualifications:

A minimum of 5 years of recent (last five years) teaching/school experience; specifically in the area of mentoring new teachers and/or teacher candidates.

Master's degree or research related experience.

Master's degree or other recognized specialization in the field such as a 3-level specialization.

Must hold an active membership in the Ontario College of Teachers.

Must be in good standing with the OCT at the time of appointment.

Demonstrated leadership in curriculum and/or education.

Exhibits contemporary knowledge of educational theory and pedagogy including assessment.

Knowledge about social justice and equity through anti-racist and anti-oppressive lenses.

Experience facilitating challenging conversations and difficult topics with adult learners.

Experience with teacher candidates or other adult learners.

Competency in using educational technology and platforms for content creation, course management and delivery.
