Health, Safety and Environment (HSE) Coordinator

Job Scope

As the Health, Safety and Environment (HSE) Coordinator, you will support HSE activities at FLSmidth's Pekin, Illinois manufacturing facility. The site employs 100+ employees and includes foundry operations, large-scale machining, paint booths, warehousing, and other heavy industrial activities.

Reporting to the HSE Manager, you will work closely with employees, supervisors, site leadership, contractors, regulatory agencies, and regional HSE personnel. This position provides an opportunity to develop broad HSE experience across occupational health and safety, environmental compliance, industrial hygiene, training, incident investigation, and risk management.

Your Responsibilities

• •Support implementation and ongoing compliance with FLSmidth Global and North America HSE standards, procedures, and programs.
• •Conduct workplace inspections, hazard assessments, job hazard analyses, and risk assessments throughout the facility.
• •Work directly with employees and supervisors to identify hazards and implement practical corrective actions.
• •Support OSHA compliance and site safety programs, including lockout/tagout, machine guarding, electrical safety, cranes and hoists, forklifts, PPE, respiratory protection, hearing conservation, confined spaces, hot work, working at heights, and hazard communication.
• •Support incident and near-miss reporting, investigations, root-cause analysis, corrective actions, and OSHA recordkeeping.
• •Coordinate and deliver HSE training and maintain required training records.
• •Support industrial hygiene and occupational health activities, including exposure assessments and implementation of appropriate controls.
• •Support environmental compliance programs, including RCRA Large Quantity Generator requirements, hazardous and non-hazardous waste management, air permitting, wastewater, and Stormwater Pollution Prevention Plan (SWPPP) requirements.
• •Work closely with the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency (Illinois EPA) and other regulatory agencies on applicable environmental requirements, inspections, reporting, permitting, and compliance activities.
• •Assist with environmental monitoring, sampling, emissions calculations, regulatory reporting, and maintenance of required compliance documentation.
• •Support internal and external HSE audits and regulatory inspections and track corrective actions through completion.
• •Review contractor activities and support contractor HSE compliance while work is performed onsite.
• •Maintain accurate HSE records, metrics, reports, permits, training documentation, and compliance calendars.
• •Promote employee involvement, hazard and near-miss reporting, Stop Work Authority, and operational ownership of HSE.
• •Escalate significant compliance issues and uncontrolled risks to site and HSE leadership.
• •Occasional travel may be required, up to 10%.

What You Bring

We are looking for someone who is interested in developing a career in Health, Safety and Environment and is comfortable working in an active manufacturing environment.

• •Strong interest in occupational health and safety, environmental compliance, or a related field.
• •Ability and willingness to learn applicable OSHA, EPA, Illinois EPA, and company HSE requirements.
• •Ability to work effectively with employees, supervisors, managers, contractors, and regulatory personnel.
• •Willingness to spend significant time on the manufacturing floor, including foundry, machine shop, warehouse, and painting operations.
• •Ability to wear a tight-fitting respirator.
• •Ability to identify problems, ask questions, research requirements, and follow issues through to completion.
• •Strong organizational, documentation, written, and verbal communication skills.
• •Comfortable delivering training and communicating HSE expectations to employees.
• •Basic proficiency with Microsoft Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and electronic systems.
• •Self-motivated with the ability to work independently while seeking guidance when appropriate.

Preferred Qualifications

The following qualifications are preferred but are not required:

• •Associate's or bachelor's degree in Occupational Safety, Environmental Science, Industrial Hygiene, Engineering, Environmental Engineering, or a related field.
• •Previous HSE, manufacturing, environmental, internship, co-op, military, technical, or industrial experience.
• •Familiarity with OSHA general industry requirements.
• •Familiarity with EPA or Illinois EPA environmental requirements.
• •Experience or coursework involving RCRA hazardous waste, air permitting, emissions, stormwater/SWPPP, wastewater, or environmental compliance.
• •Experience in a foundry, machine shop, metal fabrication, painting/coating, warehouse, or other manufacturing environment.
• •Experience conducting inspections, risk assessments, training, or incident investigations.
