Job Summary

The Endoscopy Technician / Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) is a dual-skilled allied healthcare professional responsible for supporting diagnostic and therapeutic gastrointestinal procedures, including colonoscopies, upper endoscopies (EGDs), and advanced therapeutic interventions such as ERCP. Working under the direct supervision of Registered Nurses and attending physicians, this role supports sterile processing, specialized endoscopic equipment management, and direct patient-centered care while maintaining high standards of infection control, patient safety, and procedural efficiency. Position may be full-time, part-time, or per diem based on department needs.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

• •Inspect, test, and calibrate flexible and rigid endoscopes, video processors, light sources, insufflators, and electrocautery units before cases begin.
• •Prepare sterile instrument trays, supplies, and medications as delegated, using aseptic technique and manufacturer guidelines.
• •Rapidly identify and troubleshoot equipment malfunctions to minimize procedural delays and maintain on-time clinical schedules.
• •Support gastroenterologists and surgeons during procedures by anticipating needs, passing instruments, operating specialized accessories, and managing suction or specimen retrieval within scope.
• •Assist with safe patient positioning, comfort measures, and application of monitoring devices under the guidance of nursing staff.
• •Ensure proper collection, labeling, handling, and documentation of tissue biopsies and cytological specimens according to institutional policy.
• •Perform immediate bedside pre-cleaning of endoscopes after procedures to prevent organic soil from drying.
• •Safely transport scopes to the reprocessing area and perform manual cleaning, leak testing, automated washing, and high-level disinfection (HLD) or sterilization according to manufacturer instructions and infection-control standards.
• •Maintain reprocessing and quality-assurance logs, including scope serial numbers, patient identifiers, chemical minimum effective concentrations (MECs), and cycle parameters.
• •Greet patients, verify identity and informed consent, provide clear communication and reassurance, and assist with post-anesthesia recovery support as needed.
• •Collaborate with nurses, anesthesiologists, physicians, sterile processing personnel, and other members of the care team to maintain a safe and efficient workflow.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

• •Strong understanding of aseptic technique, infection control standards, sterilization methods, and prevention of microorganism transmission.
• •Ability to stand for prolonged periods and lift or transport patients and heavy equipment.
• •Meticulous attention to detail and ability to follow step-by-step reprocessing protocols without taking shortcuts.
• •Ability to remain calm and focused in high-pressure clinical environments.

Requirements

Experience

• •Experience in an endoscopy, operating room, surgical services, or sterile processing environment preferred.
• •Experience with endoscopic equipment, procedure-room setup, or scope reprocessing preferred.

Licensure/Certification

• •Basic Life Support (BLS) certification through the American Heart Association (AHA) or American Red Cross (ARC) required.
• •Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) through NBSTSA preferred.
• •Certified Endoscope Reprocessor (CER) or Certified Flexible Endoscope Reprocessor (CFER) through CBSPD or HSPA preferred.

Working Conditions / Physical Demands

Work in hospital endoscopy suites, operating rooms, outpatient ambulatory surgery centers, or specialized gastroenterology settings.

Exposure to bodily fluids, infectious materials, and chemical disinfectants; appropriate PPE is required.

Routine early-morning shifts, scheduled weekdays, and rotating call participation may be required based on facility needs.
