Facility Pest Control Technician

Summary

The primary responsibility of this position is to plan, implement, and manage a complete and comprehensive Integrated Pest Management Program for both the Charles George VA Medical Center and the Franklin VA Clinic. This position conducts all interior and exterior pest control measures across the entirety of the medical center campus and the Franklin VA Clinic to ensure a safe, healthy, and pest-free environment for Veterans, staff, and visitors.

Duties

Duties include, but are not limited to: Ability to do the work of the position without more than normal supervision Frequently lifts and handles material weighing over 50 pounds and carry chemical solutions weighing up to 40 pounds for extended periods. May use ladders or lifts and frequently work from heights exceeding 20+ feet (i.e., removing bees from trees or pests in roofing). Develop pest maintenance schedules, determine materials needed, and select appropriate application methods. Devise and maintain pest program plans and conduct ongoing pest surveillance and troubleshooting. Select appropriate approaches and methods, deciding whether to use chemical or physical strategies to control pest infestation. Utilize floor plans and blueprints to locate potential pest harborages. Locate and avoid building supports, wiring, plumbing, and duct work when planning applications. Identify, control, and prevent infestations of common household, structural, public health, nuisance, and plant pests. Select, mix, and apply both restricted-use and general-use pesticides to control a wide variety of insects, vertebrate, and plant pests. Determine the most effective pesticide toxicity and chemical solutions to utilize. Calibrating pest control equipment and adjusting nozzle settings. Use of equipment such as wrenches, pliers, screwdrivers, and similar hand tools to provide operator maintenance of application equipment. Work Schedule: Monday -Friday, 0700 - 3:30pm. On-call Evenings/Weekends based on the needs of the Service or Organization. Qualifications

To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement, 10/05/2026. EXPERIENCE: A specific length of training and experience is not required, but you must show evidence of training or experience of sufficient scope and quality of your ability to do the work of this position. Evidence which demonstrates you possess the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform the duties of this position must be supported by detailed descriptions of such on your resume. Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Federal Wage System Qualification Standards. SCREEN-OUT ELEMENT: Your qualifications will first be evaluated against the prescribed screen out element, which usually appears as question 1 in the on-line questionnaire. Those applicants who appear to possess at least the minimal acceptable qualification requirement are considered for further rating; those who do not are rated ineligible and are eliminated. PREFERRED: North Carolina Pest Control License preferred, but not required (will be required within 11 months of hire date); Pest control and identification experience preferred Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Physical Requirements/Working Conditions: The Pest Controller may lift and handle materials weighing over 50 pounds and carry chemical solutions weighing up to 40 pounds for extended periods. Incumbent may work in cramped and uncomfortable positions. Frequent stooping, bending, kneeling, climbing and working in uncomfortable conditions may be encountered. The incumbent may move furniture, equipment, etc., as part of the treatment process. Incumbent may complete assignments indoors or outdoors. The position may be exposed to areas with minimal ventilation and/or limited access. The position is required to wear necessary safety equipment (i.e., respirators, gloves, and other personal protective devices) while completing and preparing all applications. May need to respond and/or on-call 24 hours a day for emergencies to prevent loss in service and/or delay in patient care.
