POSITION FUNCTION :

The FSL Instructor prepares curriculum materials and delivers instruction under the MOSAIC curriculum guidelines for students for day and/or evening classes.

KEY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

The French as a Second Language Instructor prepares curriculum materials and delivers instruction under the MOSAIC curriculum guidelines for students for day and/or evening classes.

Use the NCLC (Niveaux de compétence linguistique canadiens) to inform planning

Identify achievable learning objectives relevant to students

Apply the principles of communicative and task-based lesson-planning

Incorporate content and adapt methodology to accommodate diverse needs of immigrant and refugee students by seeking knowledge of learners’ lives and backgrounds, and responding to students’ needs and goals

Use current and appropriate media technology as a tool to support students’ language learning and/or real-life skills (e.g., computer literacy, writing an email, reading a website)

Facilitate language learner involvement in the community by incorporating local community resources and materials in lessons, and by creating assignments that encourage learners to interact in real-world situations

Identify when a learner needs assistance and respond appropriately by making adaptation within the curriculum and the classroom. Refer students to appropriate internal or external resources in response to students’ needs

Use a variety of assessment tools and techniques appropriate for ongoing formative assessment in relation to the NCLC descriptors for the four skill areas.

Maintain student attendance records, and forward a monthly report to the appropriate staff person

Supervise classroom volunteers or classroom assistants

Check emails regularly and respond in a clear and well-expressed manner within one to two business days.

May coordinate and liaise with consultants and/or volunteers/mentors for delivery of program or project activities, as needed

Demonstrate commitment and professionalism by seeking feedback from peers and observing expert teachers or mentoring new teachers, incorporating new skills, and taking an active role in department meetings

Keep the Manager regularly informed on participant progress and achievement of outcomes.

Maintain and provide statistics on participant progress in the format prescribed either by the funder or department procedures

Other duties as assigned by Instructional developer or the Manager

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Working knowledge of language programming issues for adults; working knowledge of Niveaux de compétence linguistique canadiens (NCLC); knowledge of virtual classroom platforms (e.g., Zoom, Microsoft Teams) and digital learning tools (e.g., Moodle, interactive whiteboard software, or learning apps); standard office equipment, MS Office; publishing software, databases, Internet browsers, web search engines, slide shows, and teaching applications.

Minimum 2 years of teaching experience

Knowledge of the TCF and/or TEF

Current and satisfactory Criminal Record Check required

DESIRED SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS:

Ability to design, adapt, and deliver engaging lesson plans tailored to varying proficiency levels

Proficiency in teaching French: reading, writing, listening, speaking, grammar, and pronunciation

File management

English and French communication skills, other languages an asset

BONUS SKILLS/CERTIFICATIONS:

Certification in FLE ( Français Langue Étrangère ) such as DAEFLE or equivalent.

COMPENSATION: $31.26 - $34.32 per hour

HOURS: on-call Position

The successful candidate must be able to commute to either 304 - 2730 Commercial Dr., V5N 5P4 or 2555 Commercial Drive, Vancouver BC
