Summary

You will serve as a FUL - Educational Technician (Seasonal). These positions teach education programs in-person in classrooms and in the park, as well as via distance learning channels, through both established and newly developed education programs primarily for school, youth and other organized groups. Anticipated Entry on Duty: November- December 2026

Duties

The Pacific West Region is recruiting for TEMPORARY seasonal positions not to exceed 1560 hours work in a service year. Dates of employment will vary between sites depending on funding, weather conditions and visitation. Within regulatory limitations, the length of initial appointment may be shortened or extended depending on work availability and funding. Assist in developing programs which are highly proactive, and which are directly involved in the process of establishing & maintaining a professional dialogue with organizations & individuals outside the parks. Tracks & records statistics for the Education & Outreach Programs. Utilize conservation education and field science curriculum to develop and present a variety of programs and media. Answers queries from students, teachers and the general public regarding park resources and education programs. Physical Demands: Perform administrative work indoors to develop and prepare for programs. This work requires talking on the telephone, walking, speaking, field instruction, and traveling by a government vehicle to remote areas with winding roads. Working with school groups, teachers and other park partners is intellectually and or physically demanding. There may be long periods of standing and occasionally heavy lighting for community events to set up and break down equipment. Mental stress and physical fatigue occur due to high volume of personal contacts, occasional emergency responses, and the repetitive nature of interpretative programs. Working Conditions: Work is performed both indoors and outdoors resulting in exposure of a variety of weather conditions. Indoor work at a computer involves sitting or standing for long periods and is in a crowded environment. Standard operating procedures such as occupational health and safety plan, and inclement weather are in place to keep employees, partners and visitors safe.

Qualifications

All qualifications must be met by the closing date of this announcement-09/29/2026-unless otherwise stated in this vacancy announcement. All candidates must also meet Time-in-Grade requirements. To receive credit for experience, your resume MUST state either "full-time" (or "40 hours a week") or "part-time" with the number of hours worked per week to ensure proper crediting of specialized experience. Failure to adequately provide information needed to determine number of hours worked in each position may result in that time not being credited when evaluating qualifying experience. For periods of time that reflect military service, the DD-214 or Statement of Service is sufficient to meet the full and/or part-time hours requirement as the service dates will be reflected. To qualify for this position at the GS-05 grade level: Specialized Experience Requirement: you must possess at least one full year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-04 level in the Federal service (obtained in either the public or private sectors). Specialized experience is experience that involved preparing and presenting education programs to elementary school groups and providing pre- and post-activity instruction. Examples of specialized experience include, but are not limited to, environmental educator, teacher, teaching assistant, camp counselor, scout leader, coach, or other similar work. You must include hours per week worked. -OR- Education: Successful completion of four (4) years of education above the high school level in any field for which high school graduation or the equivalent is the normal prerequisite. Education must have been obtained in an accredited business, secretarial or technical school, junior college, college or university. One year of full-time academic study is defined as 30 semester hours, 45 quarter hours, or the equivalent in a college or university, or at least 20 hours of classroom instruction per week for approximately 36 weeks in a business, secretarial, or technical school. You must include transcripts. -OR- Combination of education and specialized experience. Only education in excess of the first 60 semester hours of a course of study leading to a bachelor's degree is creditable toward meeting the specialized experience requirements. Two full academic years of study, or 60 semester hours, beyond the second year is equivalent to l year of specialized experience. For example, I have 6 months of the specialized experience (50% of the experience requirement), and 3 years of college study from an accredited institution (50% of the qualifying education). You must include transcripts. Volunteer Experience: Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Education

You must submit a copy of your transcript(s) to support claimed education if substituting education for experience. Transcripts must include your name, school name, grades, credit hours earned, major(s), grade point average or class ranking, and date the degree was conferred, if applicable. A typed list of courses, grades, semester/quarter hours, GPA, etc. will not be accepted. Non-submission may result in being rated not qualified for the position. Unofficial transcripts are acceptable, but if you are selected for this position and you used your education to qualify, you must provide official transcripts before you begin work. Foreign Education: To receive credit for education completed outside the United States, you must show proof that the education has been submitted to a private organization that specializes in interpretation of foreign educational credentials and such education has been deemed at least equivalent to that gained in conventional U.S. education programs.
