What's the role?

Lead the digital technology engine behind News Corp Australia’s next chapter

News Corp Australia reaches millions of Australians every day through some of the country’s most recognised media brands. We are looking for an exceptional technology executive to lead the platforms that bring that journalism to audiences across the web, mobile and partner ecosystem.

As General Manager, Publishing & Distribution, you will own the technology strategy, roadmap, delivery and operations for the digital publishing and distribution value stream across approximately 30 brands. This is a rare opportunity to shape the future of digital media in Australia: setting the ambition for world leading web and app experiences while ensuring the platforms behind them are resilient, secure, scalable and commercially focused.

Reporting to the Director of Digital Applications and Capabilities, you will be a senior leader in the Technology, Digital & Data leadership team and a strategic partner to editorial, consumer, product, commercial and enterprise leaders.

The role

You will lead the shared digital capabilities that allow our brands to publish once, distribute intelligently and deliver exceptional experiences across every relevant channel.

Your remit includes the strategy, engineering, delivery and operational performance of:

  • Consumer facing websites and mobile applications across News Corp Australia’s portfolio
  • Publishing platforms, including WordPress, PHP and associated frontend and platform capabilities
  • Content APIs and shared content distribution services
  • Digital editions and partner products
  • Video and audio publishing and streaming capabilities
  • Media and digital asset management (MAM/DAM)
  • Digital rights management (DRM)
  • Content delivery, syndication and distribution workflows
  • Supporting capabilities such as print production integration and push messaging

You will create the conditions for these capabilities to be reused across brands and consumed by product and audience squads through well designed APIs and platforms, rather than repeatedly rebuilt.

What you will do

Set the direction

  • Define and execute the Publishing & Distribution technology strategy and multi year roadmap, aligned to audience growth, customer experience, editorial ambition and commercial outcomes
  • Establish the standards and investment priorities that will enable our web and app channels to lead the world
  • Translate business and publisher strategy into clear technology choices, sequencing and measurable outcomes
  • Balance innovation and modernisation with the reliability, security and operational discipline required of high volume publishing platforms

Own delivery and operations

  • Hold end to end accountability for delivery, service performance and continuous improvement across the value stream
  • Set the right balance between run, change and transformation, protecting uptime and resilience while increasing feature velocity
  • Build a culture of engineering excellence, observability, automation, security and learning from incidents
  • Make informed trade offs across capacity, cost, risk, quality and time to market
  • Measure success through delivered value, platform reliability, capability reuse, squad satisfaction and post go live outcomes
  • Lead a high performing value stream in a matrix model, bringing together people from technology practices, centres of excellence, vendors and cross functional squads
  • Create clarity across direct, embedded and dotted line relationships so teams can move quickly without losing technical coherence or accountability
  • Partner with practice leaders to develop capability, career pathways, engineering standards and succession
  • Coach and empower senior leaders, including the Heads of Publishing Technology and Distribution Technology
  • Build autonomous, collaborative squads that are accountable for outcomes, not activity

Partner at executive level

  • Act as the senior technology partner to editorial, product, audience, commercial and brand leaders
  • Represent Publishing & Distribution in portfolio, governance and senior leadership forums
  • Shape demand at source through a disciplined front door, clear prioritisation and transparent trade offs
  • Coordinate across product and platform squads to maximise reuse and reduce duplication
  • Manage strategic vendors, managed service partners and portfolio budgets, including blended internal and external delivery models
  • Bring a responsible, governed approach to the use of AI across publishing, distribution and media asset workflows

Who are you?

You are an established digital technology leader who has operated at scale and knows what it takes to run mission critical consumer platforms. You will combine executive presence and commercial judgement with enough technical depth to challenge assumptions, make sound architectural decisions and earn the respect of senior engineers.

You will bring:

  • Significant leadership experience in digital technology, ideally across consumer facing web, mobile applications or other high scale digital products
  • A track record of leading technology, engineering, product delivery or platform functions in media, publishing, consumer technology or another complex, high-volume environment
  • Experience owning technology roadmaps and outcomes across multiple products, brands, business units or markets
  • Strong understanding of modern web and app architectures, APIs, CMS platforms and digital content ecosystems
  • Experience with platforms such as WordPress/PHP, content APIs, video and audio, MAM/DAM, AWS, DRM, digital editions or partner distribution
  • Demonstrated success leading in a matrix or federated operating model, including influence without direct line control
  • Operational judgement and experience running resilient, secure, always on services
  • Commercial capability across budgets, vendors, managed services, capacity planning and delivery partners
  • The ability to lead transformation while maintaining trust with teams and stakeholders
  • A coaching mindset, with a genuine commitment to building leaders, developing talent and creating an inclusive, high performing culture

You do not need to be the deepest technical expert in every platform. You do need to be able to connect strategy to architecture, architecture to delivery and delivery to measurable audience and business value.
