HEALTH PHYSICIST (UPWARD MOBILITY PROGRAM)

Summary

You will serve as a HEALTH PHYSICIST within the Radiation Health Division (Code 105.5) in the Radiological Controls Department (Code 105) of PEARL HARBOR NSY AND IMF. This announcement is for an Upward Mobility Program (UMP) position.

Duties

• •You will work under the general guidance of a senior nuclear engineer, health physicist, or supervisor, performs health physicist duties pertinent to the control of radioactivity and personnel exposure to ionizing radiation in assigned project areas.
• •You will plan and write detailed steps for written technical procedures or directs the accomplishment of these steps for a job of limited scope.
• •Participates in radiological emergency planning/exercises/events involving personnel decontamination, operation of equipment used in personnel contamination, simple dose assessments, and general public interaction.
• •You will undergo an intensive and accelerated indoctrination into the theories, principles, techniques and applications of health physics, radioactivity analysis, environmental monitoring, radiation dosimetry, and industrial radiation safety

Qualifications

The Upward Mobility Program is a unique job opportunity. This program is designed to provide Department of Navy employees career growth opportunities who have potential but do not presently meet the Office of Personnel Management qualification requirements for this position. The entry level for this position is GS-09 with a full performance level of GS-12. Knowledge of employees selected may vary and will require the development of an individually tailored training plan to assist them in qualifying for the full performance level of this position. Eligibility requires that the employee be performing satisfactorily, complete all training requirements, acquire the requisite qualifications and have met time-in-grade eligibility for career ladder promotions. Entry Requirements A. Must meet OPM's Health Physicist (1306 series) positive education requirement of a degree in natural science or engineering that included at least 30 semester hours in health physics, engineering, radiological science, chemistry, physics, biology, mathematics, and/or calculus. B. Must be a current permanent employee serving under a competitive appointment or on a time limited or excepted appointment that provides for noncompetitive conversion to a permanent appointment. C. Must have a current annual performance rating as fully successful or equivalent rating of record. D. Must have at least two years of experience as a radiation worker. E. Must be a current Qualified Radiation Worker (R), Contamination Worker (Q & 0), or Radiological Controls Technician qualification (A), as defined in NAVSEA 398-0288. Education

Applicants must meet the following positive education qualifications requirements of the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Qualifications Standards Manual: Applicants must possess a bachelor's degree or higher in a natural science of engineering that included at least 30 semester hours in health physics, engineering, radiological science, chemistry, physics, biology, mathematics, and/or calculus; or the previously listed courses, plus appropriate experience or other education; or certification as a health physicist by the American Board of Health Physics, plus appropriate experience and other education that provided an understanding of sciences applicable to health physics.
