There is an urgent need for concerted efforts and investments toward the revitalization of Indigenous languages to arrest and reverse the erosion that has already occurred. Research shows that no Indigenous language in Canada is safe and that all are in varying stages of endangerment.

Indigenous languages are fundamental to the identities, cultures, spirituality, relationships to the land, worldviews, and self-determination of Indigenous peoples.

Indigenous languages have and continue to contribute to the strength of Canada as a whole, including biodiversity and the richness of linguistic and cultural heritage. The Commission is committed to protecting the vitality of all Indigenous languages, including sign languages and sleeping languages.

About the Role

The Knowledge Hub Coordinator is responsible for identifying, collecting, organizing, maintaining, and promoting Indigenous language resources, research, tools, and promising practices from across Canada and internationally. The position supports the development of a comprehensive and accessible national repository of Indigenous language knowledge, ensuring that communities, educators, researchers, and organizations can access high-quality information to support language revitalization efforts.

The Coordinator will work collaboratively with Indigenous communities, language organizations, researchers, governments, and partners to compile resources, maintain knowledge inventories, support resource development, and facilitate knowledge sharing.

Key Responsibilities

Resource Development and Management

Identify, collect, and compile Indigenous language resources, tools, research, reports, and best practices.

Maintain a national inventory of Indigenous language programs, initiatives, organizations, and services.

Organize and catalogue resources using established information management standards.

Develop and maintain searchable databases, repositories, and knowledge libraries.

Ensure resources remain current, accurate, and accessible.

Knowledge Collection and Environmental Scanning

Conduct ongoing environmental scans of Indigenous language revitalization initiatives, research, technologies, funding programs, and educational resources.

Monitor emerging trends, innovations, policies, and practices relevant to Indigenous languages.

Identify gaps in resources and recommend priorities for future development.

Prepare summaries, inventories, and resource collections on priority topics.

Knowledge Mobilization

Develop resource guides, toolkits, directories, and curated collections.

Prepare plain-language summaries of research and technical materials.

Support dissemination of resources through digital platforms, newsletters, webinars, and events.

Assist in translating research findings into practical tools for communities and language practitioners.

Community and Stakeholder Engagement

Build relationships with Indigenous communities, language authorities, academic institutions, and partner organizations.

Coordinate requests for information, resources, and research materials.

Support collaboration and information-sharing initiatives.

Facilitate contributions to the Knowledge Hub repository from external partners.

Information and Records Management

Maintain records, metadata, and resource documentation.

Ensure information is organized according to established governance and accessibility standards.

Support quality assurance and content review processes.

Track usage, downloads, and resource engagement metrics.

Reporting and Administration

Prepare briefing notes, inventories, status reports, and dashboards.

Track resource development activities and project deliverables

Support Knowledge Hub planning, reporting, and evaluation activities.

Contribute to annual work plans and organizational reporting requirements.

Assist with review committee logistics, RFP development, and review of print and digital material.

Qualifications

Education and Experience

Degree or diploma in Library and Information Studies, Information Management, Indigenous Studies, Communications, Social Sciences, Education, Public Administration, or a related discipline.

Experience working with Indigenous communities, organizations, governments, or research environments is considered an asset.

Equivalent combination of education lived experience, and professional experience will be considered.

Knowledge Skills and Competencies

Knowledge of Indigenous language revitalization initiatives and organizations.

Understanding of knowledge management and information-sharing practices.

Familiarity with Indigenous data sovereignty principles.

Knowledge of digital repositories, content management systems, and resource libraries.

Strong research and analytical skills.

Excellent organizational and information management abilities.

Strong writing, editing, and summarization skills.

Ability to synthesize large volumes of information into practical resources.

Strong relationship-building and stakeholder engagement skills.

Proficiency with Microsoft 365, SharePoint, databases, and knowledge management tools

Assets

Experience working with Indigenous organizations, communities, or research initiatives

Knowledge of one or more Indigenous languages.

Proficiency in an Indigenous language and bilingualism (English/French).
