Library Technician

Summary

This position is located at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center, DIR for Education, Training and Research, DEPT of Graduate Dental and Medical Library in Bethesda, MD. The Darnall Medical Library situated in the historic Tower supports military readiness, care & research M-F 0700-1700. This is a Direct Hire Authority (DHA) solicitation utilizing the DHA for Certain Personnel of the DoD Workforce to recruit and appoint qualified candidates to positions in the competitive service.

Duties

• •Staffs the library circulation desk: answers phone, responds to customer queries, and charges/discharges materials.
• •Answers ready reference questions and assists users with the public access catalog and other finding aids.
• •Shelf library materials using the National Library of Medicine (NLM) Classification system.
• •Use bibliography databases to access catalog records in response to patron requests.
• •Perform database cleans up of records and files.
• •Use library operating policies and procedures to answer questions on borrowing and access privileges.
• •Facilitates Inter-library Loan and document deliver using library databases, loan procedures, and library programs.

You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience; if qualifying based on education, your transcripts will be required as part of your application. Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes processing a variety of library materials utilizing an automated library system; applying knowledge of library policies and procedures to answer a variety of patron questions; retrieving catalog records from databases; and assisting patrons on use of automated equipment, public access catalogs and other finding aids. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-06). Some federal jobs allow you to substitute your education for the required experience in order to qualify. For this job, you must meet the qualification requirement using experience alone--no substitution of education for experience is permitted.
