Summary

Employee will be assigned to the Maintenance and Operations Section of Facilities Management Service, VA Healthcare System, Seattle, WA. The Locksmith performs complex tasks involved in building, repairing, overhauling, modifying, adapting, testing and installing a variety of locking and security devices typically found on doors, desks, compartments, cabinets, mobile equipment, safes and other secured locations.

Duties

*NOTE: THIS ANNOUNCEMENT HAS BEEN EXTENDED* Duties include, but may not be limited to the following: Performs all duties of a journeyman Locksmith. Has responsibility for the facility's Locksmith program including data entry and updating key and core information into space files. Responsible for the training and development of key control programs for all key control representatives. Operates a computerized system of records. Establishes and maintains the key control system for Engineering Service. Work also includes duplicating and cutting keys, the installation, troubleshooting, repair and modification of keying and combination of locking mechanisms and the management of the key control system for the medical center and remote facilities. Reviews drawings/blueprints provided to determine each type of lock for new construction projects. Independently solves problems that require modification of accepted trade practices, procedures and methods and must make difficult judgments and decisions when modifying and reworking locking devices for special security objectives. Improvises trade techniques to adapt locking mechanisms for uses to which they were not specifically designed to hamper or prevent the use of standard neutralization techniques. Removes locks, disassembles and detects worn or damaged parts, i.e., broken springs, jammed pins, bent discs, broken tail pieces, rust and corrosion. Lubricates and cleans parts, straightens bent parts, replaces broken parts, reassembles, tests and reinstalls devices. Carefully monitors the key accountability system in use. Maintains master keying plans for facility. Maintains materials and full set of tools and equipment. Requisitions and stocks all supplies required in performance of duty. Has a working knowledge of all types of electronic security locking devices for basic maintenance and repair. Performs other related duties as assigned. Qualifications

PHYSICAL EFFORT AND WORK CONDITIONS: Installs, maintains, troubleshoots and repairs equipment or components from ladders, platforms and scaffolding and in cramped or hard to reach areas. This can require walking long distances, prolonged standing, stooping, kneeling, bending, and climbing in uncomfortable or tiring positions. Frequently lifts, carries, and sets up materials and equipment that weigh up to 10 pounds. Occasionally may handle materials and equipment that weighs in excess of 50 pounds. The working conditions vary with the environment. It may be inside or outside, and is generally dirty, dusty, greasy, and may be in inclement weather. May be assigned to work in areas where certain potentially harmful physical and/or chemical agents are present such as in the research labs. To ensure employee safety and health, personnel protection programs are maintained. These programs may include engineering controls, training, work procedures, use of personal protective equipment, and medical surveillance. As part of the medical surveillance programs, may be required to take medical examinations to assess medical qualification for duty.
