Maintenance Mechanic

Summary

The incumbent performs routine maintenance and repairs to facilities, structures, equipment and related fixtures primarily at the Ralph H. Johnson VA Medical center in Charleston, SC. May occasionally be required to perform work at our Myrtle Beach CBOC and other locations as needed.

Duties

Incumbent uses a variety of trade practices associated with carpentry, masonry, painting, and other related trades. Incumbent will be required to hang sheetrock, hang wall items, assist construction crew with projects within the Medical Center and CBOCs, hospital signage work, wainscot paneling and trim work, hard vinyl flooring (Centiva) and other duties as assigned Incumbent will be required to paint, prepare wall surfaces for painting, protect surrounding area from paining activity, fume co 1trol and trim work. Incumbent must have knowledge of maintenance trades sufficient to perform routine maintenance tasks and projects. Work Schedule: Monday-Friday, 7:30am-3:30pm. Subject to change based on Agency Needs. Qualifications

To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement, 10/07/2026. EXPERIENCE: A specific length of training and experience is not required, but you must show evidence of training or experience of sufficient scope and quality of your ability to do the work of this position. Evidence which demonstrates you possess the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform the duties of this position must be supported by detailed descriptions of such on your resume. Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Federal Wage System Qualification Standards. SCREEN-OUT ELEMENT: Your qualifications will first be evaluated against the prescribed screen out element, which usually appears as question 1 in the on-line questionnaire. Those applicants who appear to possess at least the minimal acceptable qualification requirement are considered for further rating; those who do not are rated ineligible and are eliminated. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Physical Requirements/Working Conditions: The work requires prolonged standing, climbing up and down ladders and scaffolding, working in cramped awkward positions while installing items; reaching, lifting, and bending while using hand and powered tools; lifting, pushing and pulling objects of varying weights up to 20 pounds and less often, up to 50 pounds. Occasionally lifts or moves with assistance moderately heavy objects weighing more than 50 pounds. Also requires working outside in low and high temperatures with frequent breaks.
