A Glimpse of the Job

The Marine Low Voltage Electrician (Under 1000 volts AC) performs operation, maintenance, trouble shooting and repair of existing low voltage power, lighting, galley, laundry, ventilation, elevator, crane, deck machinery, fire & safety, automation and control equipment and systems aboard ship and performs installation of new low voltage equipment and systems aboard ship as directed. Cognizance of consumption of consumables and spare parts and maintains inventory of same.

Essential Duties/Tasks:

ELECTRICAL COMPONENT OPERATION/MAINTENANCE/TROUBLESHOOTING/REPAIR -

Provide electrical maintenance troubleshooting and repair in the outlined systems below:

• •POWER – Safely operate, maintain, trouble shoot and repair switchboards, distribution panels, electrical wiring, circuit breakers, motors, motor controls, motor control centers, variable frequency drives, soft starters, contactors, relays. Perform electrical insulation resistance testing; electrical power system thermographic survey, motor current signature analysis.
• •LIGHTING – Safely operate, maintain, trouble shoot and repair navigation, accommodation, machinery, classroom, conference room, multipurpose room lighting systems and equipment throughout the vessel. The work area includes working aloft at height both within machinery spaces and on weather decks
• •GALLEY – Safely operate, maintain, trouble shoot and repair galley equipment and systems including but not limited to ovens, griddles, fryers, refrigeration, freezers, water heaters, galley ventilation, range hoods.
• •VENTILATION– Safely operate, maintain, trouble shoot and repair ventilation systems consisting of air handlers, dampers, motors, variable frequency drives, dampers, fire dampers, remote controls.
• •DECK MACHINERY– Safely operate, maintain, trouble shoot and repair ships anchor windlass (P/S) and mooring winches (fwd/aft), (P/S).
• •FIRE & SAFETY– Safely operate, maintain, trouble shoot and repair ships automated fire doors and system, sliding watertight doors, accommodation space fire sprinkler system, fire detection system, machinery space water fog system, machinery space INERGEN fire suppression system, local fire suppression systems.
• •AUTOMATION and CONTROL – Safely operate, maintain, trouble shoot and repair automation and control systems associated with HVACR, remote control valves, tank level indication, UPS and battery systems for lighting, switchboards, propulsion remote control, computer network systems, etc.

LOGISTICS MANAGEMENT AND OTHER –

• •Maintains cognizance of inventory of consumption of consumable and spare parts inventory, advises engineering leadership of consumption, recommendations and requirements for ordering.
• •Other duties as assigned; work with engineering license students to the extent that it does not interfere with performance of primary duties outlined above.

Required Education and Experience:

• •High School diploma or GED
• •Six months of related experience

Required Licenses and Certifications

MMC Endorsement as wiper or above

Preferred Qualifications

• •5 years experience as marine electrician
• •MMC Endorsement as QMED(Electrical)

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Ability to sail with vessel during annual sea term (60-90 days) and attend vessel during periodic shipyard availability

Additional Information

Machines or equipment used in the performance of essential duties

MULTI-METER, INSULATION RESISTANCE TESTER (MEGGER), wire and network tracer, hand tools, small power tools, ladders

Ability to lift and move heavy objects

• •Ability to maintain the security and integrity of critical infrastructure, which may include communications systems, computer networks and systems, cybersecurity systems, electrical grid, hazardous waste treatment system or water treatment system
• •Pass USCG physical. Function aboard a ship at sea
• •This position is security sensitive
• •This position requires compliance with state and federal laws/codes and Texas A&M University System/TAMU policies, regulations, rules and procedures
• •All tasks and job responsibilities must be performed safely without injury to self or others in compliance with System and University safety requirements
