Materials Handler Supervisor

Summary

This position is located in the Warehouse area of the Logistics Service in a Veteran Affairs Health Care System (VA HCS) and supported catchment area. Plans the workload of the workers, equipment, facilities, materials and tools on a day-to-day basis. Manages receipt and delivery of supplies, expendable and non-expendable equipment for the VA HCS and supported catchment area. Position is under the general supervision of the Material Manager within the Logistics Service.

Duties

Major duties and responsibilities include: Plans and reviews priorities to ensure the team has the needed supplies, equipment, and tools to operate on a daily basis. Develops and adheres to work priorities, project schedules, resources, and detailed work plans. Follows customary work cycles and sequences in planning work assignments. Tracks and reports progress on work assignments, and determine changes in alternative tasks regarding delays or other unanticipated circumstances which alter daily workflow plans. Recommends changes to schedules, priorities, and work sequences as necessary and makes minor deviations in procedures or redirect resources under their control to overcome problems such as equipment failure, material delays, or unplanned absences. Maintains the flow of the warehouse by planning the use of workers, equipment facilities and materials to ensure product is being transported, delivered and stored per appropriate procedure. Assigns work to subordinates and provides technical direction and/or help in accomplishing difficult work steps and processes. Inspects completed work for quality and compliance with original requirements. Reports progress and issues to the Material Manager. Identifies resource needs to overcome obstacles or advance warehouse operations. Represents the service as the materials handler supervisor working with stakeholders in order to address unanticipated problems with ongoing projects and/or work in progress. Supports and explains management programs to their subordinates. Conducts performance ratings, training, disciplinary actions, changes in performance standards, and the most suitable applicants for vacancies. Advises and counsels workers on how to improve their performance and explains new work techniques. Investigates grievances and complaints, resolves them informally, and notifies supervisors of those of sufficient importance or seriousness. Assures safety and housekeeping practices are observed. Maintains work reports and records and appropriate documentation for tracking and reporting on work assignments for utilization to recommend changes to schedule and request for funding for overtime. NOTE: A valid driver's license is required for this position. Qualifications

To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement, 10/07/2026. EXPERIENCE: A specific length of training and experience is not required, but you must show evidence of training or experience of sufficient scope and quality of your ability to do the work of this position. Evidence which demonstrates you possess the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform the duties of this position must be supported by detailed descriptions of such on your resume. Physical Requirements/Working Conditions: Work involves considerable walking, pushing and pulling a variety of carts and materials handling equipment; offloading and loading trucks, lifting products on and off shelves, handling boxes frequently weighing over 40 pounds; handles equipment, furniture and materials of an awkward and heavier nature in excess of 100 pounds (typically using specialized equipment and/or assistance of co-workers). Greater physical effort may be required on projects involving the movement of large quantities of products over an extended period including turn-ins, large shipments and deliveries. While operating vehicles, may be required to exert a greater level of physical exertion while backing and turning trucks, operating forklifts, or hand trucks on uneven terrains and uncertain conditions. Working Conditions require working in storage buildings, pods, trailers, vehicles and warehouses that may be hot, cold, drafty and poor lighting; work outdoors, on docks, making deliveries in all types of weather conditions during all seasons; hazardous materials may be encountered in daily work activities; will be subject to the possibility of trips, falls, scrapes, cuts, bruises, or injury from the use of equipment; may be subject to conditions that could result in serious accidents; personal protective equipment may be required.
