This position supports Mercy's philosophy of patient centered care by performing administrative and clinical duties in an outpatient setting including limited medication administration in the outpatient setting.

Job Description

Job Duties

  • Triages patients either in person or on telephone. Schedules appointments, answers questions and/or determines the need for provider intervention.
  • Supports the practice and acts as a liaison between the providers and patients.
  • Manages phone calls to patients regarding test/lab results and provides appropriate instruction for treatment, as directed by the providers.
  • Processes medication requests/changes/refills per established protocols. This includes having knowledge of medications, including basic dosages, side effects and interactions.
  • Meets requirements for handling and disposing of bio-hazardous waste.
  • Provides patient education as needed for the scheduled test/procedures.
  • Provides assistance with diagnostic procedures and treatments as directed by the provider. This includes obtaining specimens, labeling and disposition to the laboratory and explaining diagnostic procedures to patient as needed.
  • Effectively documents within the electronic health record.
  • Follows Mercy's safety guidelines, carries out job-specific safety duties and responsibilities, and promptly reports any unsafe conditions, situations, incidents and injuries.

Department Specific Duties

Mercy Pediatric Clinic

  • Rooms and prepares patient for examination. This includes histories, vitals, reason for visit, presenting symptoms and current medication list.
  • Completes discharge of patient from exam room. This may include written instructions, scheduling a follow-up appointment, providing referral information or scheduling patients for testing procedures and providing instructions.
  • Prepares the exam and treatment rooms, including instrument, supplies and protective devices for exam and testing. Maintains and stocks supplies. Cleans and sterilizes instruments in accordance with infection control and manufacturer recommendations.
  • Maintains on-site sample medications according to Mercy's policies and procedures
  • Administers injections as needed.

Mercy Pediatric Cardiology Clinic

  • Rooms and prepares patient for examination. This includes histories, vitals, reason for visit, presenting symptoms and current medication list.
  • Completes discharge of patient from exam room. This may include written instructions, scheduling a follow-up appointment, providing referral information or scheduling patients for testing procedures and providing instructions.
  • Prepares the exam and treatment rooms.
  • Maintains and stocks supplies. Cleans and sterilizes instruments in accordance with infection control and manufacturer recommendations.
  • Maintains on-site sample medications according to Mercy's policies and procedures .
  • Reviews medical records prior to patient visits to ensure physician/provider has appropriate history to see the patient, if not, facilitates receipt of documentation, testing results, and imaging.
  • PALS within 6 months of hire.

Mercy Cardiology Clinic

Patient Care & Clinical Support

  • Greet, room, and prepare patients for exams (vitals, history, symptoms, medications).
  • Assist with or perform phlebotomy and specimen collection (e.g., glucose testing, point of care INR, etc.) as ordered.
  • Conduct EKGs, manual blood pressure measurements, and other diagnostic procedures as directed and according to established clinic protocols.
  • Demonstrates competency in IV insertion and port access.
  • Administer medications/injections and perform wound care, IV insertion, and infusaport access per established protocols.
  • Operates and demonstrates knowledge of equipment: EKG management system, Holter/telemetry monitors, specialized IV pumps, glucometers, OmniCell, etc.
  • Provides cross-coverage for infusion and other assigned areas.
  • Provide patient education on diagnoses, procedures, medications, and treatments.
  • Monitor and respond to changes in patient condition; perform emergency response within scope.
  • Completes discharge of patient from exam rooms.

Communication & Coordination

  • Function as a liaison between the provider and patients.
  • Manage appointment scheduling, follow-ups, referrals, and lab/test result calls.
  • Coordinates procedural scheduling and communication among staff, physicians, and patients (ie: cardiac catheterizations, interventions, TEEs, Cardioversions, electrophysiology procedures, and other advanced cardiac testing/procedures).
  • Communicate effectively with patients, families, providers, and multidisciplinary teams.
  • Track and preauthorize procedures and specialty medications with insurers.
  • Collaborate with providers and interdisciplinary teams to ensure proper handoffs and continuity of care.
  • Works as a team member to support clinic operations and patient care coordination.
  • Attend departmental meetings and participate in special projects as assigned.

Documentation & EHR

  • Accurately document care in the Electronic Health Record (EHR).
  • Document all care activities, interventions, and patient responses with accuracy and timeliness.
  • Manage intake questionnaires and discharge instructions.

Facility & Equipment Maintenance

  • Stock, clean, and disinfect exam rooms and equipment (e.g., tables, BP cuffs, glucometers).
  • Maintains equipment and can troubleshoot issues that arise.
  • Perform department-specific cleaning and compliance audits (daily/weekly/monthly).
  • Follow infection control and safety protocols.

Compliance & Quality Improvement

  • Identify and support quality improvement opportunities.
  • Practice cost containment through efficient use of time and resources.
  • Follow all safety guidelines and report incidents promptly.

Certifications

ACLS required within 6 months of hire.

Cardiothoracic Clinic

Certifications

ACLS required within 6 months of hire.

Neurosurgery Clinic

  • Rooms and prepares patient for examination. This includes histories, vitals, reason for visit, presenting symptoms and current medication list.
  • Completes discharge of patient from exam room. This may include written instructions, scheduling a follow-up appointment, providing referral information or scheduling patients for testing procedures and providing instructions.
  • Prepares the exam and treatment rooms, including instrument, supplies and protective devices for exam and testing. Maintains and stocks supplies. Cleans and sterilizes instruments in accordance with infection control and manufacturer recommendations.
  • Maintains on-site sample medications according to Mercy's policies and procedures
  • Administers injections as needed.
  • Administers spirometry testing.
  • Assists with minor in-office procedures.

Mercy Family Counseling

Assists physicians with TMS treatment when needed.

MMC General Surgery

  • Rooms and prepares patient for examination. This includes histories, vitals, reason for visit, presenting symptoms and current medication list.
  • Completes discharge of patient from exam room. This may include written instructions, scheduling a follow-up appointment, providing referral information or scheduling patients for testing procedures and providing instructions.
  • Prepares the exam and treatment rooms, including instrument, supplies and protective devices for exam and testing. Maintains and stocks supplies. Cleans and sterilizes instruments in accordance with infection control and manufacturer recommendations.
  • Performs Point of Care bedside testing
  • Identifies operational inefficiencies or areas for improvement to clinic nurse manager.
  • May be responsible to fulfill some of the duties of a Patient Service Coordinator or patient care staff, depending on the size of office site.
