Summary of Job Duties:

The MLS I position is an entry-level position within the Blood Bank department. This position is responsible for performance of high complexity testing, and assisting with day-to-day operations. This position will also focus on improving patient outcomes by performing advanced blood banking techniques, dispensing blood and blood components, and educating students. This position will provide direct patient care by supplying the patient with appropriate blood components as determined by accurate testing to ensure the patient receives the appropriate blood components. This position is also responsible for performing ABO/Rh, IAT, DAT, antibody identification, cross-matching units of blood and running the automated ABO/RH and IAT equipment.

Qualifications:

Minimum Qualifications:

• •Bachelor degree in Medical Technology, Medical Laboratory Sciences or Bachelor of Science in Biology, Chemistry, or other related discipline
• •Must obtain applicable ASCP certification within 1 year of becoming eligible for certification.

Preferred Qualifications:

• •Bachelors degree in Medical Laboratory Sciences
• •Previous clinical laboratory experience- preferably in transfusion/blood bank laboratory

• •Perform ABO/Rh blood typing and antibody screening.
• •Perform antibody identification and compatibility testing (crossmatching).
• •Prepare and issue blood components such as red blood cells, plasma, platelets, and cryoprecipitate.
• •Investigate transfusion reactions and perform required follow-up testing.
• •Identify and work with patients who have unexpected or clinically significant antibodies.
• •Perform direct antiglobulin testing (DAT) and other immunohematology procedures.
• •Maintain appropriate storage conditions and inventory of blood products.
• •Monitor blood products for expiration, integrity, and proper handling.
• •Perform quality-control testing and maintain accurate laboratory records.
• •Operate and troubleshoot blood-bank instruments and testing systems.
• •Follow procedures for emergency and massive transfusion situations.
• •Communicate with nurses, physicians, and other laboratory departments regarding blood availability and compatibility.
• •Follow SOPs, AABB standards, CLIA requirements, and laboratory safety procedures .
• •Maintain accurate documentation in the laboratory information system.
