Summary of Job Duties:

The Medical Laboratory Scientist I in the Cytogenetics Laboratory will be responsible for performing a broad range of testing in Cytogenetics Wet Lab and Analysis. This will include, but not limited to, processing and evaluating specimens and requisitions, cell culture and harvesting, chromosome analysis, imaging and karyotyping, and reporting. In addition, the technologist will perform daily, weekly and monthly QC and preventative maintenance in their assigned areas for further review by the supervisor or Medical Director. This requires one to maintain safe work practices, follow all regulatory requirements and procedures and engage supervisor, manager, director and other department staff as appropriate.

Qualifications:

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor Degree in Medical Laboratory Sciences, Medical Technology, Biology or an ASCP approved discipline.

Preferred Qualifications

• •BSMT or BSMLS degree in Cytogenetics
• •Previous clinical laboratory experience.
• •Previous Cytogenetics experience
• •ASCP in Cytogenetics CG(ASCP)
• •General knowledge of clinical laboratory quality control practices.

• •Receive, identify, and process patient specimens such as blood, bone marrow, amniotic fluid, tissue, or other samples .
• •Perform cytogenetic testing, including chromosome analysis (karyotyping) .
• •Prepare specimens for chromosome studies, including cell culture, harvesting, and slide preparation.
• •Perform FISH (fluorescence in situ hybridization) testing according to established procedures.
• •Analyze chromosomes for abnormalities in number, structure, and morphology .
• •Use microscopes, imaging systems, and laboratory software to evaluate chromosome preparations.
• •Assist with testing for abnormalities such as aneuploidies, deletions, duplications, translocations, and other chromosomal changes .
• •Perform quality-control procedures and document results accurately.
• •Follow established laboratory protocols, safety procedures, and regulatory requirements.
• •Troubleshoot specimen or testing problems and escalate unusual findings to senior technologists or supervisors.
• •Maintain laboratory equipment, reagents, and supplies.
• •Enter and maintain accurate patient and test information in the laboratory information system.
• •Assist with validation, quality assurance, proficiency testing, and continuous-improvement activities.
• •Communicate significant or unusual findings to appropriate laboratory personnel according to established procedures.
