We are looking for a part-time Physical Therapist to provide support in our Bronx adult programs for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Hours and schedule can be flexible, based on program needs.

SUMMARY

Under general direction, the Physical Therapist is responsible for evaluating, planning, and delivering occupational therapy services to adults with physical, developmental, and/or cognitive disabilities. The role focuses on promoting independence, functional skill development, and meaningful participation in daily living, vocational, and community-based activities. Services are provided in accordance with individualized service plans, professional standards, and all applicable regulatory and agency requirements, using a person-centered and outcomes-driven approach.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

The duties and responsibilities of the Physical Therapist will include but are not limited to the following:

  • Provides physical therapy evaluation on individuals annually in areas of muscle tone and/or strength, range of motion, reflex patterns, gross motor capacity, posture and joint alignment, patterns of locomotion and/or ambulation, activities of daily living, including transfers and wheelchair management, need for adaptive equipment and recommendations for present equipment.
  • Develops a treatment plan and goal based on assessment.
  • Selects educational, recreational and social activities to aid the people we support in adjusting to their disability and teaches adaptive skills necessary to perform daily living and/or vocational tasks.
  • Participates in in-service education for other staff relevant to techniques and objectives of program.
  • Participates in interdisciplinary team meetings and annual reviews as required by each program.
  • Integrates therapeutic intervention techniques into programs or home of person served through consultation with parent/guardian and staff at team meetings, case conferences or through other informal contacts.
  • Documents therapy activities and results on residential records, assist in overall evaluation and rehabilitation of the people we support’s medical/psychiatric condition by conferring with social workers, nurses and other clinical staff.
  • Records progress on all active cases in therapy, monitors therapy status, and makes appropriate recommendations as changes occur.
  • Refers the people we support to other clinical services if such referral is felt appropriate.
  • Fits adaptive devices for the people we support such as splints, shoes or braces.
  • Assists with other duties i.e. arrival, dismissal, mealtime, bathroom use, classroom management.
  • Provides supervision to Interns and Physical Therapy Assistants as needed.
  • Maintains equipment and orders supplies as required.
  • Performs other related duties as requested.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Master’s Degree in Physical Therapy
  • Current NY State license in Physical Therapy
  • One year of prior Physical Therapy experience required, preferably supporting individuals with developmental disabilities.
  • Familiarity with nonprofit service delivery models is preferred.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills are required to interact effectively with employees, co-workers, families, other departments, outside contacts, etc.
  • Ability to work independently and handle multiple tasks simultaneously.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Strong initiative, an eagerness to learn, and the ability to work both as part of a team and independently.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality.
  • Ability to prioritize assigned tasks and travel to, and between programs, administrative, and project locations.
  • Excellent computer skills, including Microsoft Office.
  • Passion for ADAPT's mission and demonstrates a commitment to the non-profit disability sector.

COMPENSATION: $50 - $60/hour
