Job Description:

Reporting Relationship

The Launch PI works closely with site Clinical Operations leadership, the Director of Nursing Services, START Executive Leadership, the Chief Medical Officer, and Technology leadership. The Launch PI is accountable for physician investigator activity at the site until a full-time Physician Investigator Site Leader assumes that responsibility, at which point the Launch PI may transition to a defined ongoing role or complete the engagement.

Engagement Model and Time Commitment

The Launch PI role is structured in phases aligned to site readiness and go-live:

Pre-Launch (Months 2–3 before go-live): a few hours per week, focused on protocol and study selection input, credentialing, regulatory and IRB set-up, and early staff engagement.

Final Month Before Go-Live: time commitment increases to approximately 16 hours per week.

Includes an on-site visit of up to one week at an established NYOH/START clinic to become familiar with START systems, workflows, and documentation standards.

Go-Live and Early Operations: continues at approximately 16 hours per week as the site's Principal Investigator, providing patient-facing and protocol oversight through the early operational period.

Transition: upon hire of a full-time Physician Investigator Site Leader, the Launch PI typically transitions out of the interim PI role. It is not unusual for the Launch PI to remain engaged with the Phase 1 unit in an ongoing capacity of approximately 1–2 days per week thereafter.

Pre-Launch Responsibilities

Support site readiness activities in partnership with Clinical Operations and Technology leadership, including protocol selection input, feasibility review, and study start-up sequencing.

Complete credentialing, privileging, and required regulatory documentation ahead of go-live.

Participate in site build-out planning, including capacity, staffing, and workflow design specific to Phase 1 requirements.

Complete on-site training at a reference NYOH/START clinic to gain familiarity with START systems, standard operating procedures, and documentation practices.

Launch-Phase Physician Investigator Responsibilities

Serve as the site's Principal Investigator for enrolled protocols during the interim period, providing new patient consults, consent visits, safety follow-ups, and infusion oversight as required.

Ensure timely completion of protocol-required investigator activities, including data entry and safety reporting.

Serve as the point of clinical escalation for physician-dependent decisions at the site until a full-time Physician Investigator Site Leader is in place.

Coordinate with Nursing, Clinical Research Coordinators, Regulatory, and Marketing to support clinic operations and communication during the ramp-up period.

Provide input to site leadership on study selection and portfolio fit as the unit builds its early caseload.

Transition and Ongoing Involvement

Support a structured handoff of patients, protocols, and site knowledge to the incoming full-time Physician Investigator Site Leader.

Where mutually agreed, continue in an ongoing capacity within the Phase 1 unit (approximately 1–2 days per week) following the transition to full-time leadership.

Provide mentorship to incoming and junior investigators as needed to support continuity of clinical research capability at the site.
