Principal Software Engineer, Amazon Autos

We are looking for a highly skilled Principal Engineer to collaborate with product managers, designers, external vendors, and partner engineering teams in designing and developing automotive shopping experiences. We seek a Principal Engineer with the expertise, ambition, and passion to tackle challenging problems, particularly within the automotive industry. Experience in large distributed systems, near-real-time data ingestion and processing, in-vehicle or embedded software, regulated industries, or generative AI/LLMs is highly valued. You will be instrumental in solving unique industry challenges and introducing innovative features that set new standards in the market.

As a Principal Software Engineer at Amazon, you will influence technology choices, lead continuous innovation, and shape the future of Amazon Autos and digital advertising.

In this role, you’ll regularly review designs with senior executives, working in a web services-based environment using Java on both backend systems and frontend pages. You will be an expert in Big Data technologies, developing innovative solutions for highly performant distributed systems. Proficiency in full-stack development, operational excellence, relational and non-relational databases, and strong data modeling skills are essential. You'll have opportunities to expand existing offerings and build new systems from the ground up.

You will be responsible for managing your work queue, making informed design decisions backed by data and customer insights, and navigating difficult design challenges. As an advocate for our customers, you'll have a deep understanding of our customer base, the competition, and the industry. We are seeking a Principal Engineer who can think big, conceptualize and design products with proven customer value, create technical solutions that address customer pain points, invent new interaction patterns, and collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams. You will design and deliver experiments that drive new learnings and develop products for a global customer base.

• Key job responsibilities
• •Ownership for overall system architecture, technology, scalability, reliability, and performance for key AIP services in Automotive.
• •Demonstrate technology thought leadership directly with AWS customers and at Industry Events
• •Facilitate technical collaboration across AIP services and work with other PE's across AIP and Amazon.
• •Mentor and develop engineers, help define and grow the technical culture, and assist in attracting and retaining top engineering talent
• •Demonstrate both Amazon LP's and Amazon Principal Engineering Tenets.

• This team is part of an early stage business with a vision to create innovative automotive discovery and shopping experiences on Amazon, providing customers better convenience and more selection. We’re collaborating with other experienced teams at Amazon to define the future of how customers research and shop for cars online.

Basic qualifications

• •Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or equivalent
• •10+ years of professional software development experience
• •7+ years of designing and building large-scale distributed systems
• •Experience leading technical strategy and architecture for organizations of 30+ engineers
• •Proven track record of delivering high-performance data systems that put data directly into the hands of sophisticated customers through programmatic interfaces
• •Experience presenting technical strategies to senior executive leadership

Preferred qualifications

• •Experience with advertising or retail technology platforms or large-scale reporting systems
• •Experience with AWS cloud infrastructure (S3, EMR, SQS, Kinesis, Firehose)
• •Publications, talks, or recognized thought leadership in distributed systems
• •Experience mentoring engineers to Staff/Principal level
• •Track record of building consensus across organizations with competing technical priorities
