About The Role

The Publishing Director role is a key strategic role within the Springer publishing programme, with responsibility for creating strategic plans to grow and develop a global portfolio of journals, and for driving these plans forward by leading, managing and nurturing a team of individuals. It is ideal for those who thrive in leadership roles and are energised in working with others to move ideas into impactful initiatives.

Role Responsibilities

• •Builds effective teams: Create a positive and energetic team environment, providing trusted management in which your team are engaged, can learn and develop, and understand the value of their contribution to the business.
• •Portfolio Development and management: Create and update the strategy for your portfolio of journals, including new launches, informed by higher-level strategic priorities and relevant market analyses.
• •Drives results: Lead and track implementation of your portfolio strategy by your team and ensure that our strategic priorities are well understood by them. Ensure new titles are launched to schedule and are successful in attracting and publishing high quality content.
• •Financial acumen: With your VP, take responsibility for the business performance of your group.
• •Builds networks: Work closely with your team to build close working relationships with external EiCs, EBMs and the wider research community, attending external and virtual meetings as appropriate. Look for opportunities to demonstrate Springer Nature’s thought-leadership position and demonstrate our worth as a strategic publishing partner.
• •Business Development: Develop strong awareness of the leading societies, associations and journal owners in your communities with whom we might partner. Develop and maintain relationships and pursue opportunities as appropriate.
• •Business Insights: Understand the trends and changes in the researcher community and wider publishing industry; and translate these market developments into initiatives for your portfolio with a particular focus on Open Science, Open Access and market share.

Experience/Skills/Qualifications

• •Excellent management and communication skills
• •Excellent leadership and team-building qualities
• •Demonstrable experience of leading a team within a scientific/academic publishing environment
• •Excellent English language skills
• •Proven experience of translating market opportunities into profitable business models
• •Thorough understanding of the research or scientific process as it pertains to publishing
• •Thorough understanding of the needs of editors, authors and referees as key customers
• •Strong analytical skills
• •Strong commercial skills
• •Enthusiasm and passion for excellence in research and science
• •Significant experience within a scientific/academic publishing environment
• •Educated to a minimum of degree level or equivalent, preferably in a relevant field of study
