Employment Status: Full-Time (80-hours/2-week pay period distribution)

Shift: Nights Only (6 PM – 7 AM)

Position Summary:

The Critical Care APP provides comprehensive management of critically ill adult patients within a medical ICU with multiple service lines including thoracic surgery, vascular surgery, general surgery, interventional cardiology, ***. Intensive Care Units at these sites are open units with mandatory intensivist consultation. This role is designed as a performance-based position with accountability for clinical quality, operational efficiency, patient outcomes, interdisciplinary collaboration, and adherence to evidence-based critical care practices.

Success in this role is measured not only by completion of assigned clinical duties, but by demonstrated contributions to patient safety, throughput, quality metrics, procedural competency, and team effectiveness.

Primary Responsibilities:

Clinical Care

• •Manage critically ill patients in collaboration with intensivists.
• •Perform comprehensive assessments, diagnostic evaluations, and treatment planning.
• •Respond to acute clinical deterioration and critical care emergencies.
• •Perform credentialed procedures including arterial line placement, central venous catheter insertion, temporary dialysis catheter insertion, intubation assistance, and thoracentesis.
• •Document care accurately and complete billing documentation within established timelines.
• •Work directly with eICU and on-call physician team during evening shifts

Operational & Quality Performance

• •Support efficient ICU patient flow and timely completion of admissions, transfers, and discharges.
• •Participate in multidisciplinary rounds and coordinate care across nursing, respiratory therapy, pharmacy, and consulting services.
• •Contribute to quality initiatives related to sepsis, ventilator management, CLABSI/CAUTI reduction, and evidence-based ICU bundles.
• •Participate in performance improvement activities.
• •Participate in regionalized scheduling coverage expectations
• •Support of cross-site ICU coverage when operationally required
• •Participation in Sentara PCCM onboarding, simulation, or ultrasound initiatives

Professional Development

• •Maintain required licensure, certifications, and credentialing.
• •Complete departmental onboarding and competency requirements.
• •Participate in ongoing critical care education, simulation training, and procedural competency assessments.
• •Contribute to APP education, onboarding, or mentoring activities as appropriate.
• •Emergency Neurologic Life Support and Fundamentals of Critical Care Support within the first year of employment

Required Qualifications:

• •Graduate of an accredited Physician Assistant of Acute Care Nurse Practitioner program
• •Current Virginia Licensure (or eligibility)
• •National certification as PA-C, ACNP, or AGACNP
• •BLS and ACLS certification
• •Ability to obtain and maintain hospital privileges for approved ICU procedures

Preferred Qualifications:

• •1 year experience in medical, surgical, cardia, or neurocritical care ICU settings
• •Critical care ultrasound/POCUS training

We provide market-competitive compensation packages, inclusive of base pay, incentives, and benefits. The base pay range for full-time employment is $115,315.20 - $312,000.00 annually. Additional compensation may be available for this role, such as shift differentials, on-call pay, shift premiums, extra-shift incentives, or bonus opportunities. Compensation within the range may vary based on qualifications, experience, location, market conditions, and business needs. Note: If an annual salary is posted, it is based on a full-time colleague working 2,080 hours annually.
