Job Title: Quality Assurance Specialist

Position Overview
The Quality Assurance Specialist performs data acquisition and quality assurance activities for external beam treatments and radiation oncology equipment. This position receives training and supervision in the operation of quality assurance instrumentation, procedures, and software until competency is demonstrated. Following successful completion of training and demonstration of competency, the Quality Assurance Specialist independently performs assigned routine quality assurance activities within established procedures and communicates results to Medical Physics leadership.
This position also assists with quality and performance improvement activities and generates reports related to machine and treatment-specific testing.
Key Responsibilities
Acquire and collect evidence-based quality assurance data related to radiation oncology equipment, treatments, and patient safety
Participate in structured training on LINAC operations, quality assurance instrumentation, software, procedures, and applicable safety requirements
Perform assigned quality assurance testing under appropriate supervision during training and independently perform routine assigned testing after competency has been demonstrated, in accordance with established procedures and protocols
Operate quality assurance instrumentation and applicable software to collect, record, analyze, and maintain quality assurance data
Support quality and performance improvement activities through the collection and analysis of quality assurance data and application of established regulatory standards and healthcare best practices
Utilize statistical process tools and process improvement methodologies, as appropriate, to support continuous improvement in patient care and outcomes
Generate reports related to machine and treatment-specific quality assurance testing
Effectively communicate quality assurance measurements, test results, variances, and identified concerns to physicists and the Director of Medical Physics
Recognize results or conditions outside established parameters and appropriately escalate findings to Medical Physics staff
Progressively assume additional responsibilities as training is completed and competency is demonstrated
Perform other job functions as assigned or requested
Qualifications
Education & Experience
Required:
Currently enrolled in and actively pursuing a BA/BS in physics, nuclear engineering, medical physics, engineering, or a closely related field
Preferred:
Completed BA/BS in physics, nuclear engineering, medical physics, engineering, or a closely related field
Previous laboratory, research, technical, healthcare, or radiation oncology experience
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
Basic knowledge of physics, mathematics, and scientific principles, with the ability to develop working knowledge of radiation oncology quality assurance practices
Ability to learn and demonstrate competency in LINAC operations, quality assurance instrumentation, record-and-verify systems, and QA software
Ability to follow established technical procedures and protocols and, once competency is demonstrated, independently perform assigned routine quality assurance activities
Ability to collect, organize, analyze, and accurately document technical data
Ability to learn and apply statistical process tools and process improvement methodologies
Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, including the ability to recognize results outside established parameters and escalate concerns appropriately
Strong technical ability in basic business software such as Microsoft Excel, PowerPoint, and Word
Strong professional, organizational, and interpersonal skills with the ability to effectively communicate quality assurance findings and organize multiple tasks and projects
Work Environment & Physical Demand
Physical activities may include climbing, pushing, standing, hearing, walking, reaching, grasping, kneeling, stooping, and repetitive motion
Must have good balance and coordination
Light work requiring exertion of up to 25 pounds of force occasionally and/or up to 10 pounds of force frequently
Close visual acuity is required for activities such as preparing and analyzing data and figures, transcribing, viewing a computer terminal, and extensive reading
The position is not substantially exposed to adverse environmental conditions; job functions are typically performed under conditions such as those found in general office or administrative work
