With approximately $14 billion in reserves serving 300,000 policyholders, CNA’s LTC business is an important strategic priority for CNA.
This is an exciting opportunity to drive strategy and execution as a member of CNA’s LTC Reserving and Finance team. This position works a hybrid schedule from the CNA Chicago office at 151 N. Franklin St. and offers full actuarial exam study support, flexible work options and a focus on professional development.
JOB DESCRIPTION:
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
Performs a combination of duties in accordance with departmental guidelines:
- Manages execution of monthly reserving and financial close processes performing complex actuarial calculations and collaborating with Reserving actuary team members and cross functional partners.
- Drives the process behind the determination of reserves to support the monthly close process and annual reserve testing for the LTC block of business.
- Owns the roadmap and cross functional execution of improving and modernizing reserving-specific data preparation workflows through adoption of industry leading tools and simplifying processes.
- Ensures the accuracy of all financial reports and statements with adherence to SOX controls, in close collaboration with Finance peers and other Actuarial teams.
- Produces highly technical reports and communicates with other actuarial and analytical staff and management, including presentations to senior management.
- Facilitates communication and provides technical guidance to business partners and other functional areas, such as Claims and Finance, on actuarial issues.
- Monitors experience and financial trends for the LTC and structured settlement segments.
- Manages project teams and may be responsible for special projects and presentations.
- Provides guidance to less experienced team members and may lead and/or participate in special projects.
- Stays current in the functional area of expertise and on industry trends and developments, and ensures knowledge transfer within the organization.

Skills, Knowledge & Abilities
- Strong knowledge of the core functions of an insurance company, general insurance, actuarial and statistical concepts.
- Advanced actuarial and financial expertise and product-specific knowledge.
- Strong interpersonal, communication and presentation skills, with the ability to effectively interact with all levels of CNA’s internal and external business partners.
- Strong analytical, critical-thinking and problem-solving skills, with the ability to effectively resolve complex situations and issues.
- Strong project management, organization and planning skills, with the ability to manage multiple projects effectively and lead teams.
- Ability to exercise independent judgment and make critical business decisions effectively within the scope of authority, based on data analyses and reviews.
- Ability to creatively and effectively manage ambiguous and challenging problems, lead through change and take appropriate levels of risk.
- Ability to comprehend business data and metrics and further articulate analyses of actuarial data within internal reports.
- Experience working in a SOX controlled environment with financial results reporting.
- Experience with Microsoft Office Suite and other business-related software systems, including processing systems and applications.
- Experience with ETL tools, such as SQL or Alteryx.
- Experience with BI tools, such as Tableau, PowerBI, or Looker.
- Preferred, but not required, experience with programming and tools such as SAS, SQL or R; experience with Google Cloud Platform; or experience with actuarial valuation systems such as AXIS Actuarial Modeling Software.
- Preferred, but not required, experience with insurance reserve accounting standards (i.e. GAAP or LDTI).
Education & Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in a relevant discipline, or equivalent.
- Typically a minimum of five to seven years of related work experience.
- Typically holds an Associate of the Society of Actuaries (ASA) credential and may be working toward Fellowship; may include candidates who have attained their FSA.

In Illinois/New York/California, the average base pay range for a Senior Actuarial Consultant is $134,500 to $190,500. Salary determinations are based on various factors, including but not limited to, relevant work experience, skills, certifications and location.
I n certain jurisdictions, CNA is legally required to include a reasonable estimate of the compensation for this role. In District of Columbia , California, Colorado, Connecticut, Illinois , Maryland , Massachusetts , New York and Washington, the national base pay range for this job level is $72,000 to $141,000 annually. Salary determinations are based on various factors, including but not limited to, relevant work experience, skills, certifications and location.
