Senior Java Software Developer (Modern Architectures & Distributed Systems)

About your role: We are looking for a Senior Java Software Developer to help elevate our backend engineering and take our distributed platform to the next level. While our teams already operate with established domain services, we need a forward-thinking technical lead to drive the next evolution of our architecture—transitioning toward event-driven, highly resilient, and modern microservice paradigms. You will design, build, monitor, and maintain high-throughput backend systems within a scalable Docker/Kubernetes environment. As a Senior Developer, you will set the technical bar, champion modern software craftsmanship, and partner with cross-functional teams to deliver secure, observable, and production-grade software at scale.

• What you’ll do:
• •Architect, build, and maintain next-generation, event-driven microservices and high-performance APIs (REST/gRPC) that evolve our platform beyond traditional domain service boundaries.
• •Drive modern architectural patterns (e.g., Event-Driven Architecture, CQRS, Saga/Outbox patterns, and Reactive Programming) to maximize system responsiveness, decoupling, and scalability.
• •Establish operational excellence and observability standards across services, incorporating OpenTelemetry, distributed tracing, structured logging, and proactive alerting.
• •Implement resilient integration patterns (circuit breakers, rate limiting, retries) and asynchronous messaging workflows using Kafka or SQS/RabbitMQ.
• •Design and execute automated unit, integration, and contract tests to ensure zero-downtime, continuous deployment capabilities.
• •Own containerized application lifecycles, collaborating with platform engineering on Kubernetes deployments, Helm/Kustomize manifests, and GitOps workflows.
• •Elevate developer velocity across the engineering organization by establishing modern SDLC practices, leveraging AI-assisted coding tools, and refining CI/CD pipelines.
• •Mentor engineers, lead rigorous architecture and design reviews, and foster a culture of shared technical ownership and continuous learning.
• •Actively participate in Scrum Agile ceremonies, serving as a key technical voice in project estimation, technical scoping, and platform strategy discussions.

• Experience you’ll need to have:
• •Education: Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or equivalent practical experience.
• •Seniority: 7+ years of professional experience building, scaling, and maintaining complex backend production systems within an agile product environment.
• •Core Java & Spring Ecosystem: Mastery of modern Java (Java 17/21+) and deep expertise with Spring Boot for building enterprise-grade microservices and gRPC/REST APIs.
• •Advanced Architectural Patterns: Demonstrated experience modernizing backend platforms beyond basic domain services into asynchronous, event-driven, and loosely coupled distributed architectures.
• •Containerization & Orchestration: Direct hands-on experience containerizing workloads with Docker and running microservices in production Kubernetes environments.
• •Distributed Data Systems: Deep understanding of relational (PostgreSQL/MySQL) and NoSQL/caching stores (Redis), including schema design, query optimization, and distributed data consistency trade-offs.
• •Security & Compliance: Practical knowledge of secure coding practices, OAuth2/OIDC, mTLS, and secrets management tools (e.g., HashiCorp Vault).
• •Engineering Rigor & Velocity: Proven track record with modern CI/CD pipelines, automated testing (unit, integration, mock frameworks), and AI-assisted engineering tools.

• Experience that would be great to have:
• •Hands-on experience with streaming/event platforms (Apache Kafka) and implementing event-sourcing or transactional outbox patterns.
• •Experience with advanced Kubernetes ecosystem tools (Helm, ArgoCD, Kustomize, Istio/Service Mesh).
• •Exposure to cloud-native infrastructure (AWS, GCP, or Azure) using Infrastructure-as-Code (Terraform).
• •Deep experience establishing full-stack observability stacks (OpenTelemetry, Prometheus, Grafana, Datadog).
• •Proven success mentoring mid-level engineers and guiding teams through architectural modernizations.

How you’ll work:

• •This role is on-site Monday through Friday. Fiserv considers in-person collaboration to be an essential part of this role as in-person office experiences help you with your overall onboarding experience and leads to stronger productivity.
• •This role requires use of a computer and audio equipment.
