  • Join M&T Bank's Digital Banking organization and help drive the reliability, resiliency, and performance of the platforms our customers depend on every day. As a Senior Software Engineer, Site Reliability Engineering (SRE), you will play a key role in supporting and modernizing the technology behind M&T's online and mobile banking experiences, helping ensure critical customer-facing applications remain highly available, secure, and performant. This role offers the opportunity to work across both legacy and modern digital banking platforms while contributing to M&T's ongoing technology transformation. You will partner closely with engineering, infrastructure, architecture, and business teams to build resilient systems, improve observability, strengthen operational excellence, and resolve complex production challenges. The ideal candidate is passionate about reliability engineering, cloud technologies, and software delivery automation, enjoys solving difficult technical problems, and thrives in a highly visible environment where their work has a direct impact on customer experience. The successful candidate will bring experience supporting Microsoft Azure environments, Infrastructure as Code (IaC) practices using Terraform, CI/CD automation, modern release engineering concepts, and highly available deployment architectures. As a member of the Digital Banking SRE team, you will help shape the future of site reliability practices across mobile and online banking platforms through automation, monitoring, incident response, performance optimization, continuous improvement initiatives, and modern software delivery practices.
  • Primary Responsibilities
  • Design, develop, maintain, and support highly available, resilient applications and services within M&T's Digital Banking ecosystem.
  • Work independently and within the boundaries of the approved Software Development Lifecycle (SDLC) to process, design, and develop applications that solve business needs while minimizing operational risk.
  • Author organized, clean, efficient, secure, and maintainable code in support of customer-facing digital banking platforms.
  • Contribute to the reliability, scalability, and operational excellence of mobile and online banking applications.
  • Implement and support Site Reliability Engineering best practices, including monitoring, observability, automation, alerting, incident response, and production support.
  • Develop and enhance solutions that improve application availability, resiliency, fault tolerance, and performance.
  • Support Service Level Objectives (SLOs), Service Level Agreements (SLAs), and operational performance measurements.
  • Investigate, troubleshoot, and resolve complex production issues while driving root cause analysis and permanent corrective actions.
  • Participate in release planning, deployment activities, production readiness reviews, release validation, and post-implementation verification efforts.
  • Utilize source code management tools to manage and deploy applications while ensuring compliance with SDLC policies and supporting merge conflict resolution.
  • Regularly review pull requests, provide constructive feedback, and support change management processes.
  • Build, support, and optimize CI/CD pipelines utilizing GitLab, Artifactory, and deployment automation technologies.
  • Develop and maintain Infrastructure as Code (IaC) solutions using Terraform to automate infrastructure provisioning and platform management.
  • Support and enhance Digital Banking applications hosted within Microsoft Azure cloud environments.
  • Implement and support modern deployment strategies including Active-Active architectures, Blue/Green deployments, Canary releases, and progressive delivery practices.
  • Participate in release engineering activities including deployment planning, rollback procedures, production validation, release governance, and operational readiness reviews.
  • Independently analyze technical and business requirements to ensure completeness, feasibility, scalability, and supportability.
  • Collaborate with engineers, architects, infrastructure teams, and business partners to deliver reliable technology solutions.
  • Contribute to the design and implementation of enterprise monitoring, logging, and observability capabilities.
  • Document technical designs, implementation details, operational procedures, and support requirements.
  • Participate in architecture discussions and contribute recommendations that improve reliability, maintainability, scalability, and performance.
  • Stay current on emerging technologies, engineering practices, and industry trends related to software engineering, cloud engineering, DevOps, release engineering, and Site Reliability Engineering.
  • Understand and adhere to the Company's risk and regulatory standards, policies and controls in accordance with the Company's Risk Appetite. Identify risk-related issues needing escalation to management.
  • Promote an environment that supports a culture of belonging and reflects the M&T Bank brand.
  • Maintain M&T internal control standards, including timely implementation of internal and external audit points together with any issues raised by external regulators as applicable.

  • Education and Experience Required
  • Associate's degree and a minimum of 5 years' systems analysis and/or application development work experience or Bachelor's degree and a minimum of 3 years' systems analysis and/or application development work experience. In lieu of degree, a combined minimum of 7 years' education and/or relevant work experience, including a minimum of 3 years' systems analysis and/or application development work experience.
  • Advanced proficiency in a minimum of 1 relevant programming language.
  • Experience designing, developing, and supporting enterprise applications in production environments.
  • Experience implementing and supporting highly available, resilient, customer-facing applications.
  • Knowledge of Site Reliability Engineering (SRE) principles and operational excellence practices.
  • Experience with application monitoring, observability, logging, alerting, and performance analysis.
  • Experience supporting production systems, troubleshooting incidents, and resolving complex technical issues.
  • Understanding of Service Level Objectives (SLOs), Service Level Agreements (SLAs), and reliability metrics.
  • Experience supporting applications in Microsoft Azure cloud environments.
  • Experience implementing Infrastructure as Code (IaC) using Terraform or similar technologies.
  • Experience with CI/CD pipelines, deployment automation, and software delivery best practices.
  • Experience using source control and software delivery tools such as GitLab and Artifactory.
  • Understanding of release management, release engineering, deployment governance, and operational readiness concepts.
  • Knowledge of high-availability deployment models and resiliency patterns, including Active-Active architectures.
  • Experience collaborating across engineering, infrastructure, architecture, and business teams.
  • Strong analytical, troubleshooting, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to work independently while managing multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
