Software Engineer Sr (Senior Database Automation Engineer)

As Software Engineer Sr. within PNC's Technology organization, you can be based in Pittsburgh PA (preferred), Strongsville OH, Birmingham AL, Phoenix AZ or Dallas TX.

You will be part of a team responsible for designing, developing, and maintaining automation solutions supporting enterprise database platforms. The role combines strong Oracle DBA expertise with software engineering, infrastructure automation, platform engineering, and operational excellence.

The successful candidate will lead efforts to automate database provisioning, patching, compliance validation, monitoring, reporting, vulnerability remediation, and operational processes. While Oracle technologies will represent the initial area of focus, the long term objective is to establish automation frameworks, standards, and engineering patterns that can be leveraged across all database technologies supported by Data Platform Services.

• Primary Responsibilities
• Automation Engineering
• Design and develop enterprise automation solutions for database platform operations.
• Build reusable automation frameworks and engineering patterns.
• Eliminate manual operational processes through automation.
• Develop automated validation, reporting, monitoring, compliance, and remediation capabilities.
• Maintain code repositories, documentation, and automation standards.
• Integrate automation with enterprise tooling, APIs, and CI/CD pipelines.

• Oracle Platform Expertise
• Serve as a senior Oracle DBA with deep knowledge of Oracle database administration.
• Support Oracle RAC, ASM, Multitenant, RMAN, Data Guard, Fleet Patching and Provisioning, Enterprise Manager, Exadata, and Recovery Appliance technologies.
• Design and automate database build, patching, cloning, migration, backup, recovery, and validation processes.
• Troubleshoot complex database and infrastructure issues.

• Multi Platform Database Automation
• Expand automation capabilities beyond Oracle to support enterprise database platforms including:
• SQL Server
• PostgreSQL
• MySQL
• MongoDB
• Future database technologies adopted by the organization
• Develop platform agnostic engineering patterns whenever practical.
• Partner with database platform engineering teams to identify automation opportunities and standardize operational workflows.

• Security and Compliance
• Develop automation supporting vulnerability remediation initiatives.
• Automate evidence collection and compliance reporting.
• Implement automated security validation capabilities.
• Integrate automation with identity, access management, and privileged access systems.

• Operational Excellence
• Create dashboards, reporting solutions, and operational metrics.
• Improve service reliability and consistency through automation.
• Identify opportunities for process improvement and operational simplification.
• Reduce toil and manual effort across engineering teams.

• Technical Leadership
• Provide technical mentorship to engineering staff.
• Lead strategic automation initiatives.
• Participate in backlog prioritization and delivery planning.
• Influence engineering standards, best practices, and automation strategy.

Required Qualifications

• Database Expertise
• Experience with database administration or database engineering experience.
• Experience of Oracle DBA experience in large scale enterprise environments.
• Strong knowledge of:
• Oracle RAC
• ASM
• RMAN
• Data Guard
• SQL and PL/SQL
• Performance tuning
• Backup and recovery
• Multitenant architecture

• Automation Experience
• Experience of automation development experience.
• Advanced Python development skills.
• Strong Linux shell scripting expertise.
• Experience with Ansible or comparable automation frameworks.
• Experience working with REST APIs.
• Experience using Git or equivalent source control systems.

• Infrastructure Engineering
• Strong Linux administration experience.
• Familiarity with enterprise monitoring solutions.
• Experience supporting highly available production environments.
• Ability to troubleshoot across operating system, database, network, and application layers.

• Preferred Experience
• Exadata administration.
• OEM administration.
• Fleet Patching and Provisioning (FPP).
• Database migration and modernization initiatives.
• CI/CD pipeline development.
