Intern's expenses : This is a remote internship. For the six-month internship, the selected intern will receive two stipend payments of $500.00 each, one in the second month and one in the fifth month of the internship. These payments are intended to assist in covering expenses such as phone, electricity, internet, office materials, and other internship-related expenses.

Overview

Cultural Survival's internship program creates mentorship, learning, and development opportunities for individuals interested in the non-profit sector, particularly in the vital work performed by Cultural Survival toward advancing and defending Indigenous People’s rights, lands, languages, and cultures. This initiative is one of the paths by which we demonstrate our social commitment to academic development and the awarding of meaningful learning opportunities.

About the internship

We are accepting applications for an upcoming remote internship opportunity for Spring 2027 within our Communications department. The selected intern will report to our Senior Communications Manager, and the internship length is 6 months.

We are looking for a self-driven, resourceful, independent and reliable person with initial experience and a genuine desire to grow across multiple areas of communications. The ideal candidate has a strong interest in non-profit communications and prior experience/curiosity to learn about Indigenous Peoples' rights and cultural practices. Interns must be independent, self-motivated, and reliable.

The selected intern will work under the guidance of the Senior Communications Manager and will coordinate with both the communications team members and other program areas. Core responsibilities will include supporting the administration and production of the organization's key publications: our quarterly magazine, monthly e-newsletters, social media content, website posts and reports.

Applicants must demonstrate strong writing skills and feel comfortable coordinating and conducting interviews with a variety of stakeholders. Prior experience with digital tools such as Canva, CapCut, Adobe Suite, and Mailchimp is a plus, though a willingness to learn is equally valued.

Fluency in English is required; proficiency in Spanish and any Indigenous language is highly desirable. Knowledge of additional languages, including Portuguese or French will be considered an asset.

Key learning objectives:

Enhance proficiency in creating written and multimedia content addressing Indigenous issues across a range of platforms and media channels.

Deepen understanding of Indigenous Peoples' movements, communities, and the ongoing challenges that shape their experiences globally.

Develop skills in navigating and collaborating within a culturally diverse, globally dispersed, and remote work environment.

Key tasks:

Conduct research and interviews to write articles, summaries, spotlights, and reports.

Create and schedule social media content across platforms.

Design visual assets using Canva or Adobe Suite to complement written content.

Edit short-form video content using CapCut or similar tools for social media.

Assist with editing and translation of articles, depending on language skills.

Help organize and maintain digital files and mailing lists in Mailchimp.

Support content management for our website and digital magazine.

Draft and proofread monthly e-newsletter content, ensuring consistency in tone and formatting.

Support other communications tasks as needed.

Weekly time commitment

The ideal candidate is passionate about our mission and can commit to approximately 15 hours per week. A reliable internet connection and flexibility to work during morning/afternoon EST hours are expected.

Cultural Survival offers schedule flexibility, structured onboarding, and monthly mentorship sessions within the department to support each intern's experience and development.

Upon successful completion of the internship, the intern will qualify to receive an internship certificate of completion.
