the posting

Obsidian Systems is a software engineering consultancy that builds production systems for capital markets and other regulated industries. Our clients include market infrastructure providers, national exchanges, and global financial institutions. Much of our work today centers on the Canton Network, the privacy enabled blockchain adopted by major capital markets institutions, where Obsidian is one of the most experienced engineering firms in the ecosystem. We're a remote-first, globally distributed team that values ownership, curiosity, and clear communication. We believe the best ideas come from people who ask difficult questions, take responsibility for their work, and collaborate openly to solve challenging problems.

About The Role

We’re looking for a contract accountant to provide interim support for the end-of-year close and into 2027. You’ll own core accounting activities across a growing, multi-entity business while working with a complex mix of fiat, cryptocurrency and multi-currency transactions. As we scale, the role may become permanent, making this the perfect role for someone ambitious to grow from a skilled accountant into a strategic financial partner in a fast-moving, cutting-edge business.

Key Responsibilities

Accounts Receivable

Process invoices and track incoming payments across fiat and cryptocurrency transactions

Reconcile payments across bank accounts, wallets, and exchanges

Monitor aging reports and follow up on outstanding balances

Partner with operations to make sure billing is accurate and on time

Accounts Payable

Process vendor invoices, manage approvals, and execute payments (ACH, wire, and crypto where applicable)

Ensure invoices are properly coded, documented, and compliant with internal controls

Maintain vendor records and support 1099 reporting at year-end

Reconciliation & Month-End Close

Perform bank and crypto wallet reconciliations

Support the month-end close process and help make it more efficient over time

Investigate and resolve discrepancies across systems, entities, and currencies

Process Cleanup & Documentation

Help clean up and organize historical accounting records

Document AR/AP workflows as they are rebuilt and standardized

Flag gaps or inconsistencies and bring solutions, not just problems

Multi-Entity & Multi-Currency Support

Work across our Delaware C-Corp and Puerto Rico entity

Handle transactions in multiple currencies, including crypto

Help maintain consistency and accuracy across both entities

Key Requirements

5+ years of hands-on accounting, bookkeeping, or finance experience

Practical experience managing accounts receivable and accounts payable, including invoicing, payment processing, and payment tracking

Hands-on experience performing bank and account reconciliations and investigating discrepancies

Solid understanding of accounting fundamentals, including debits, credits, journal entries, and AR/AP workflows

Hands-on experience with QuickBooks Online or a comparable accounting system

Strong attention to detail and accuracy, particularly when working across multiple accounts and transactions

Ability to identify and resolve discrepancies independently, escalating issues when appropriate

Clear, proactive communication skills and the ability to work effectively in a remote, distributed environment

Comfortable working in an environment where processes are still being built and improved

Preferred Requirements:

Experience working in a startup, consulting, or professional services environment

Experience working with multiple currencies and/or cryptocurrency transactions

Familiarity with digital assets, crypto wallets, or exchanges from an accounting or finance perspective

Experience supporting month-end or year-end close

Strong working knowledge of Excel or Google Sheets, including formulas and reconciliation workflows

Currently pursuing, or interested in pursuing, CPA certification

Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience

What Makes This Role Interesting

You will work with a genuinely unusual set of accounting challenges: crypto transactions, multi-currency, multi-entity, and a client base that includes institutional financial services companies

The processes are being built right now, which means you have real input into how things work, not just how they have always worked

Work at the center of capital markets’ move onto new infrastructure, selling with the credibility of an engineering firm already running production systems for these institutions.

A remote-first culture with a globally distributed team.

How We Work

At Obsidian Systems, we believe great work comes from thoughtful people who take ownership, communicate openly, and enjoy solving difficult problems together. These principles guide how we work every day.

Own Your Work, Protect Your Team

We take full ownership of our responsibilities while supporting the people around us. We believe accountability creates trust, and clear ownership allows teams to move quickly without stepping on one another's work.

Don't Settle for Superficial

We aim to understand problems deeply rather than treating symptoms. We ask questions, challenge assumptions, and make unknowns explicit so we can build durable solutions instead of temporary fixes.

Be Honest Proactively

We communicate openly and early. Raising risks before they become problems helps our team and our clients make better decisions. We value transparency over avoiding uncomfortable conversations.

Get to It

Many of the challenges we solve have never been solved before. We don't wait for perfection; we start, learn, iterate, and move forward. Progress comes from taking the next concrete step.

If you're excited by continuous learning and playing a real role in building the next generation of financial market infrastructure, you'll feel at home at Obsidian.
