About the Role
We are seeking a Backend Engineer to design and scale high-performance backend systems that power our AI-first platform. The ideal candidate has experience building distributed services in languages such as Go, Java, Python, or TypeScript. You should be deeply familiar with modern API design and communication protocols (REST, gRPC, GraphQL), and have a passion for delivering reliable, secure, and scalable infrastructure.
Ideally, you’ve worked on services that support AI functionality—whether through integrating external AI APIs, managing ML inference pipelines, or supporting data infrastructure for model training. You're not just a code contributor—you care about how your systems are deployed, monitored, and managed in production. Bonus points if you’ve worked with regulated data environments like healthcare or fintech.
This role requires a hands-on engineer who thrives in cross-functional environments, collaborates effectively with product and frontend teams, and proactively builds for scale, compliance, and maintainability.
Responsibilities
Design and implement scalable backend services and APIs (REST, gRPC, GraphQL) that power our AI-driven healthcare platform
Collaborate with frontend, product, and design teams to translate product requirements into robust technical solutions
Integrate AI capabilities into services—building pipelines, managing inference, or orchestrating external AI APIs
Ensure service reliability by implementing best practices in deployment, monitoring, observability, logging, and continuous integration
Operate production systems end-to-end, including deployment, incident response, performance tuning, and cost optimization
Handle sensitive and regulated data (healthcare, payments) with strong attention to security, privacy, and compliance
Document technical process and create standard operating procedure within the engineering team
Drive backend architecture decisions, influencing system design, data models, and service interfaces
Mentor and elevate team capability, sharing best practices and helping to scale backend engineering excellence
Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree required
5+ years of experience in backend engineering roles
Proficiency in one or more backend languages: Go, Java, Python, TypeScript
Deep knowledge of modern API protocols: REST, gRPC, GraphQL
Experience supporting production systems end-to-end: development, deployment, monitoring
Bonus: exposure to AI/ML services, whether through API integration or internal tooling
Bonus: experience with regulated data domains like healthcare or financial services
Ability to work 5 days a week in our San Francisco office with a fully in-person team
Compensation
The estimated salary range for this role is $205,000-$250,000. Total compensation for this position may also include stock options. Note that total compensation for this position will be determined by each individual’s relevant qualifications, work experience, skills, and other factors.
