Duties

As a Supervisory Fingerprint Specialist (Unit Chief), at the full performance level, you will perform the following duties: Manage overall direction of supervised units and coordinate actions with other Laboratory units, other HSI units and external partners; Identify weaknesses and problems and recommend and implement improvements and solutions in HSI Forensic Laboratory processes, equipment and materials, performance, and documentation; Review and approve the substance of reports and scientific conclusions drawn from highly technical forensic examinations, assuring their accuracy and adherence to internal, professional, and judicial standards; Directs all technical and complex fingerprint operations in response to submissions from various Federal, state, local, and foreign law enforcement elements; and Manage and provide authoritative, technical, and administrative guidance to a senior level staff composed of Supervisory Fingerprint Specialist and oversees the administrative staff personnel assigned to meet the administrative needs of the laboratory.

Experience: You qualify for the GS-15 grade level if you possess one (1) year of specialized experience at the GS-14 grade level or equivalent performing duties such as: Serving as a technical advisor in matters relating to proper collection, preservation, packaging, and submission of criminal evidence; Making recommendations that involve complex and difficult case law decisions that influence the development and modification of significant policies for federal, state, and local law enforcement agencies; and Preparing, communicating, and reporting examination results and conclusions and illustrative exhibits for court use. Participating in all aspects of the science of friction ridge analysis to include principles, theories, techniques, philosophies, concepts, and practices. Additional Requirements: Minimum of a bachelor's degree with a master's degree (preferred) from an accredited college or university. Must have extensive knowledge of laboratory accreditation requirements as set forth by ISO-IEC 17025 and the ANSI-ASQ ANAB for testing and calibration laboratories. Professional Certification: Professional Certification as a Latent Print Examiner by the International Association for Identification (IAI), or other approved organization preferred. The incumbent must be certified in latent print examination by the International Association for Identification (IAI) or otherwise possess a current professionally recognized equivalent certification.
