DIRECTOR, GRADUATE MEDICAL EDUCATION (GME)
Reports to: Chief Academic Officer
# of Direct Reports: 175-200 FTEs
On-site: Mercy Anderson Hospital, Mercy Fairfield Hospital, and The Jewish Hospital
Primary Function/General Purpose of Position
The Director, Graduate Medical Education (GME) provides strategic and operational leadership for Graduate Medical Education across the organization and serves as a senior leader responsible for the quality, growth, accreditation, and administration of the institution's residency and fellowship programs. The Director establishes and executes the GME strategy in alignment with organizational priorities and ensures the Sponsoring Institution and its programs maintain compliance with Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME), institutional, specialty-specific, and other applicable regulatory and accreditation requirements.
The Director provides leadership and oversight to GME management and partners collaboratively with the Designated Institutional Official (DIO) or Lead Physician Director (LPD), Graduate Medical Education Committee (GMEC), clinical departments, faculty, participating sites, and academic partners to advance high-quality physician education. This position is accountable for GME operations, accreditation readiness, program performance, financial stewardship, workforce planning, educational quality, and the continued development and sustainability of the organization's GME portfolio.
Essential Job Functions
- Provides strategic leadership and direction for Graduate Medical Education across the organization, including the development, implementation, growth, and continuous improvement of residency and fellowship programs in alignment with organizational and community healthcare needs.
- Provides leadership and oversight to GME operations, ; establishes performance expectations for direct reports, develops leadership capability, evaluates performance, and ensures effective coordination and accountability across the GME structure.
- Ensures the Sponsoring Institution and its accredited programs maintain substantial compliance with ACGME (or other accreditation body) Institutional, Common, specialty/subspecialty-specific Program Requirements, policies and procedures, as well as other applicable accreditation, regulatory, and institutional requirements.
- Provides executive oversight of institutional and program accreditation activities, under the direction of the DIO or LPD, including the Accreditation Data System (ADS) (if applicable), Annual Institutional Review, Annual Program Evaluations, , accreditation and site visits, special reviews, corrective action plans, and other required reporting.
- Partners with the DIO or LPD, GMEC, Program Directors, clinical and executive leadership to evaluate program performance, educational outcomes, accreditation findings, resident/fellow experience, patient safety, and other key indicators; develops and implements strategies to address identified risks and opportunities.
- Directs the administrative and financial management of GME, including operating and capital budgets, resource allocation, financial performance, program funding, staffing requirements, and long-range planning to support the sustainability and growth of medical education programs.
- Establishes and maintains effective relationships with medical schools, universities, hospitals, participating training sites, clinical departments, and other academic partners; oversees affiliation agreements and other arrangements necessary to support educational programs and clinical training experiences.
- Provides leadership for the development, expansion, restructuring, or closure of residency and fellowship programs and participating sites, including assessment of organizational need, accreditation requirements, faculty and clinical capacity, financial impact, and operational readiness.
- Promotes an institutional learning environment that supports educational excellence, professionalism, patient safety, resident and fellow well-being, faculty development, scholarly activity, quality improvement, and continuous advancement of Graduate Medical Education.
- Serves as a senior GME subject matter expert and advisor to organizational leadership and represents Graduate Medical Education on institutional committees, strategic initiatives, academic partnerships, and other internal and external forums as appropriate.
Education
Bachelor’s degree in Healthcare Administration, Business Administration, Education, Management, or related field (required).
Master’s degree in Healthcare Administration, Business Administration, Education, Public Health, or related (preferred).
Work Experience
- Five (5) years of progressively responsible experience in Graduate Medical Education, academic medicine, medical education administration, healthcare administration, or a closely related field (required).
- Three (3) years of leadership experience with responsibility for programs, operations, and/or professional staff (required).
- Experience supporting or overseeing accredited Graduate Medical Education programs and accreditation requirements (preferred).
Skills
- Advanced knowledge of Graduate Medical Education administration, ACGME Institutional and Program Requirements, accreditation standards, and academic healthcare operations.
- Demonstrated ability to provide strategic leadership across multiple residency and fellowship programs within a complex healthcare organization.
- Strong leadership and people management skills with the ability to lead managers, Program Directors, and multidisciplinary professional teams.
- Knowledge of GME finance, budgeting, resource allocation, program funding, and long-range operational planning.
- Ability to evaluate accreditation findings, program performance, educational outcomes, and organizational data and translate findings into effective action plans.
- Strong understanding of institutional accreditation, Annual Institutional Review, program evaluation, special review, and continuous improvement processes.
- Demonstrated ability to build collaborative relationships with executive leaders, physicians, faculty, academic institutions, legal partners, regulatory bodies, and participating training sites.
- Strong strategic planning, organizational development, project management, decision-making, and problem-solving skills.
- Excellent written, verbal, presentation, negotiation, and interpersonal communication skills.
- Ability to manage multiple complex priorities and exercise sound judgment in sensitive, high-impact, and confidential matters.
- Working knowledge of Microsoft Office applications, residency management systems, accreditation reporting systems, and other educational technologies.
