The Office of Threat Assessment and Management supports the university through the early identification, assessment and management of threats and concerning behaviors that may pose a risk of targeted violence to the USC community.

Reporting to the Associate Vice President, Threat Assessment & Management, the Director, Threat Assessment & Management provides leadership and subject matter expertise in behavioral threat assessment and management for USC’s Health Sciences Campus and affiliated healthcare and clinical environments. The Director works collaboratively with university and healthcare partners to support violence prevention, community safety and effective threat management practices.

This role involves sensitive and, at times, urgent matters affecting the safety and well-being of the USC community and requires discretion, sound judgment, professionalism and emotional composure.

This position will be fully onsite on the USC Health Science Campus 5 days a week with visits to hospitals and ambulatory clinics, as business needs require. This position requires the ability to respond to priority matters and emergencies outside of normal business hours when circumstances require.

Key responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Providing senior-level consultation and support to the Health Sciences Campus and affiliated healthcare and clinical environments in the identification, assessment and management of potential threats and concerning behaviors.
  • Receiving, reviewing, and triaging reports of threats, concerning behavior, stalking, harassment, domestic violence spillover, disruptive conduct, and other indicators of potential targeted violence.
  • Developing and coordinating individualized threat-management plans, including protective measures, referrals, monitoring strategies, communications protocols, and escalation criteria.
  • Leading and participating in multidisciplinary threat assessment and management meetings, guiding case discussions and coordinating response and case management activities.
  • Participating in institutional emergency preparedness, crisis response, and workplace-violence prevention exercises.
  • Serving as a Subject Matter Expert (SME) and trusted advisor to university and healthcare leadership on behavioral threat assessment, workplace violence prevention and related safety matters.
  • Building and maintaining collaborative partnerships with healthcare leadership, Human Resources, Public Safety, law enforcement, mental health professionals, Legal and other university and community stakeholders.
  • Developing and delivering training and educational programs on behavioral threat assessment and management, workplace violence prevention, concerning behaviors and applicable university policies and procedures.
  • Maintaining accurate and confidential case records, preparing reports and protocols, and supporting continuous improvement of threat assessment and violence prevention practices and programs.
  • Tracking program activity, case trends, response timeliness, outcomes, and other metrics to support leadership reporting, resource planning, and program evaluation.
  • Supporting post-incident reviews and after-action analyses to identify lessons learned and recommend improvements to policies, procedures, training, and institutional response capabilities
  • Maintaining knowledge of emerging practices, legal and regulatory requirements, and trends affecting threat assessment and management in healthcare and higher education, including relevant Cal/OSHA, HIPAA and FERPA considerations.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Master’s degree or combined experience/education as substitute for minimum education.
  • Five (5) years of progressively responsible professional experience in behavioral threat assessment and management, violence risk assessment, workplace violence prevention or a closely related field.
  • Demonstrated professional experience conducting behavioral threat assessments, developing and implementing threat management strategies, and working with multidisciplinary teams to manage individuals or situations presenting potential risks of violence.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in psychology, forensic psychology, criminal justice/criminology, social work, behavioral science or a related field.
  • Seven (7) or more years of professional experience in behavioral threat assessment and management.
  • Professional experience providing threat assessment and management services within a healthcare, academic medical center and/or higher education environment.
  • Experience addressing workplace violence prevention within healthcare or clinical settings.
  • Demonstrated experience partnering with law enforcement and mental health professionals.
  • Certified Threat Manager (CTM) credential or comparable professional certification in behavioral threat assessment and management.

The annual base salary range for this position is $120,000 – $125,000.   • Minimum Skills: Experience working with a heterogeneous population. Excellent problem-solving skills, written and oral communication skills, and listening skills. Proven interpersonal skills, with the ability to develop good stakeholder relationships and work effectively with students, faculty, staff, administrators, law enforcement, patients, and physicians. Demonstrated organizational skills and the ability to undertake multiple tasks simultaneously. High standards of professionalism and confidentiality.
  • Preferred Education: Master's degree

Preferred Skills: Professional experience in higher education or a university setting. Working experience with law enforcement.
