Summary
The Electronic Technician is responsible for the maintenance of electronic equipment and systems at the Central Texas Veterans Health Care System (CTVHCS). This position is assigned to the Electronic Technologies Section of the Clinical Engineering in Engineering Service and will provide periodic service as needed at the Community Based Outpatient Clinics (CBOC) located in Austin, Cedar Park, College Station, Palestine and Brownwood.
Duties
Major duties include, but not limited to: Deals routinely with sophisticated electronic systems/networks; including nurse call systems, fire alarm systems, CCTV network, entertainment MATV/Cable TV systems, production TV systems, voice paging systems, overhead paging systems, intercom/public address systems, patient wandering alarm systems, satellite TV systems and automated data processing (ADP) equipment, Fire Sprinkler Systems; Kitchen Suppression Systems; Security Access Control Systems; Security Intrusion Alarm Systems, Security Panic Alarm Systems; Security Surveillance Systems; Pneumatic Tube System; and contractor support. Determine whether or not equipment is performing satisfactorily. To make this determination, he/she must design test systems which includes utilizing and modifying existing test equipment for troubleshooting, repairing a wide variety of systems/networks and their components. Maintains complex electronic systems and ADP equipment which are vital to the hospital's ability to provide health care. The incumbent is capable of planning and performing scheduled and unscheduled (emergency) service on electronic equipment, systems, networks and ADP equipment to ensure that the instrument is working properly, calibrated properly, and in compliance with all applicable codes and standards. Recognized as an individual with superior knowledge of complex systems. Serves as a technical advisor and consultant to a wide variety of professional personnel, and others in the purchase of new instruments and systems, design of new systems, or modification of existing systems to meet current and projected hospital needs. Plan and perform design, development modification projects on complex electronic systems or comparable individual devices and assemblies. Adopts new and conventional components and circuits in this work, and exercises considerable originality in adapting equipment to perform new or different functions to meet staff needs. Will use advanced writing skills to communicate matters of significant importance. Incumbent will relate the results of testing and will recommend courses of action to be followed which are consequences of his/her test results. Will recommend design, redesign, modification, reutilization, or procedural changes to obtain desired results. Teach maintenance of complex electronic systems and equipment. Responsible for instructing equipment operators in the correct system usage and in operator preventive maintenance. Tesponsible for the maintenance and calibration for complex electronic systems and ADP equipment and devices which must function properly if the quality of health care is to be maintained. Failure, or prolonged failure, of these systems and devices will seriously impair patient and employee safety and the ability to properly diagnose and treat patients. Qualifications
To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement, 10/09/2026. EXPERIENCE: A specific length of training and experience is not required, but you must show evidence of training or experience of sufficient scope and quality of your ability to do the work of this position. Evidence which demonstrates you possess the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform the duties of this position must be supported by detailed descriptions of such on your resume. Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Federal Wage System Qualification Standards. SCREEN-OUT ELEMENT: Your qualifications will first be evaluated against the prescribed screen out element, which usually appears as question 1 in the on-line questionnaire. Those applicants who appear to possess at least the minimal acceptable qualification requirement are considered for further rating; those who do not are rated ineligible and are eliminated. The potential eligibles are then rated against the remainder of the Job Elements: Electronics Equipment Assembly, Installation, Repair Ingenuity Test Equipment - Electronics Troubleshooting (Electronic Equipment) Use Hand and Power Tools - Electronics Without more than normal supervision Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment. Physical Requirements: Electronics workers frequently lift and carry, unassisted, items weighing up to 18 kilograms (40 pounds). They are sometimes required to lift and carry items weighing more than 23 kilograms (50 pounds) with the help of weight handling equipment or with assistance from other workers. The work requires frequent standing, walking, bending, crouching, reaching, and stooping. Climbing and working in high places may be required. Some work may require the aid of magnifying lenses, eye loops, and microscopes to accomplish repairs on miniature components. Work is frequently performed in cramped and awkward positions. The work also requires prolonged periods of standing and walking. Working Conditions: Required to work in all areas including rooftops, grounds, pipe spaces and inside interstitial spaces on a daily bases. This requires work in semi-confined spaces where there is risk of injury. The incumbents comply with interstitial safety regulations including the use of cell phone, 2 way radio, hard hat, gloves and knee pads. Work In the interstitial space requires bending, stooping, crawling, and climbing. Work is also performed on ladders and catwalks.
