About the Role

The Engineering Manager, Data & AI is responsible for leading the engineering capabilities that underpin Tennis Australia's Data & AI strategy. This role leads the development, operation and continuous evolution of enterprise data and AI platforms, ensuring the organisation has secure, scalable and trusted capabilities to accelerate analytics, AI adoption and data-driven decision making.

Working closely with the Head of Data Analytics & Insights, AI Enablement Lead, the Engineering Manager will establish and execute a long-term platform roadmap, deliver operational excellence across data and AI services, and build the engineering capabilities required to support Tennis Australia's future ambitions.

The role will champion modern engineering practices, platform governance and enterprise data management while developing a high-performing engineering team focused on reliability, innovation and continuous improvement.

The successful candidate will:

  • Develop and execute a platform roadmap that accelerates delivery of data products, analytics capabilities and AI solutions.
  • Establish a trusted, secure and scalable enterprise data platform that supports current and future organisational needs.
  • Build the foundations of an enterprise data model that improves consistency, accessibility and reusability of data across Tennis Australia.
  • Deliver high levels of platform reliability, operational maturity and service performance across data and AI platforms.
  • Embed governance, security and quality controls into platform capabilities and engineering practices.
  • Build and lead a high-performing engineering team with strong technical capability, accountability and a culture of continuous improvement.

In this role, you will:

1. Develop Platform Strategy & Roadmap

  • Own Tennis Australia’s Data & AI roadmap and strategy.
  • Define and evolve enterprise data, analytics, and AI architecture.
  • Balance investment, capability uplift, operational needs, and technical debt.
  • Drive platform innovation to simplify, scale, and accelerate delivery.

2. Platform Engineering & Operations

  • Lead and optimise enterprise Data & AI platforms.
  • Ensure platform reliability, security and scalability.
  • Drive operational excellence through monitoring and support.
  • Increase automation and reduce manual effort through reusable services.

3. Data, AI & Governance Enablement

  • Embed governance, security, and data quality into platforms.
  • Enable trusted data and AI through strong controls and monitoring.
  • Scale responsible AI solutions across the organisation.

4. Engineering Leadership & Capability Development

  • Lead and grow the Data & AI Engineering team.
  • Set engineering standards and ways of working.
  • Coach engineers and build leadership capability.
  • Drive accountability, innovation, and future capability growth.

Essential Experience

  • 8+ years' experience in Data Engineering, Platform Engineering, Cloud Engineering or Software Engineering environments.
  • Proven experience leading and developing engineering teams.
  • Demonstrated experience building and operating enterprise-scale data platforms.
  • Experience developing platform roadmaps and executing technology modernisation initiatives.
  • Experience embedding governance, security and operational controls into engineering delivery.

Highly Regarded

  • Strong experience with modern cloud data platforms (Azure, Databricks or equivalent).
  • Experience with data architecture, enterprise data modelling and governance frameworks.
  • Understanding of DevOps, DataOps, MLOps and operational support models.
  • Experience designing scalable, secure and resilient platform solutions.
  • Strong problem solving, communication and technical leadership capabilities.
  • Ability to translate strategic objectives into practical engineering outcomes.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in technology, Computer Science, Engineering or a related discipline.
  • Relevant cloud or platform certifications highly regarded (e.g. Azure, Databricks).
