Summary

This is a Direct Hire Authority (DHA) solicitation utilizing the DHA for medical positions to recruit and appoint qualified candidates to positions in the competitive service. About the Position: You will serve as the principal staff advisor and resource for evaluating the effectiveness of controls in the abatement of health hazards, identifying potential health problems and symptoms, indicating possible occupational diseases resulting from the work environment.

Duties

  • Identify potential health problems and symptoms, indicating possible occupational diseases resulting from the work environment.
  • Conduct periodic surveys of working conditions to determine the nature and magnitude of hazardous exposures and the effectiveness of existing controls.
  • Plan, implement and evaluate a comprehensive industrial hygiene program of complex DA industrial operations.

Qualifications

Who May Apply: US Citizens In order to qualify, you must meet the education and experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience; if qualifying based on education, your transcripts will be required as part of your application. Additional information about transcripts is in this document. Basic Requirement for Industrial Hygienist Degree: Bachelor's or graduate (or higher level) degree in industrial hygiene, occupational health sciences, occupational and environmental health, toxicology, safety sciences, or related science. The education must be accredited by an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education at the time the degree was obtained. OR Related Degree: Bachelor's degree in a branch of engineering, physical science, or life science that included 12 semester hours in chemistry, including organic chemistry, and 18 additional semester hours of courses in any combination of chemistry, physics, engineering, health physics, environmental health, biostatistics, biology, physiology, toxicology, epidemiology, or industrial hygiene. The education must be accredited by an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education at the time the degree was obtained. For engineering degrees to be acceptable, the curriculum must be in a school of engineering with at least one curriculum accredited by the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET) as a professional engineering curriculum. OR Certification from the American Board of Industrial Hygiene (ABIH). In addition to meeting the basic requirement above, to qualify for this position you must also meet the qualification requirements listed below: Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes 1) Planning, implementing and evaluating comprehensive industrial hygiene programs; 2) directing and conducting periodic surveys of working conditions; AND 3) providing consultation and advice to safety, engineering and scientific personnel on occupational health problems. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-11).

Education

FOREIGN EDUCATION: If you are using education completed in foreign colleges or universities to meet the qualification requirements, you must show the education credentials have been evaluated by a private organization that specializes in interpretation of foreign education programs and such education has been deemed equivalent to that gained in an accredited U.S. education program; or full credit has been given for the courses at a U.S. accredited college or university.
