What this role is all about

As a Backend Engineer in our Kafka team, you will work on the systems that power large-scale data streaming and event-driven services across Infobip. You will contribute to the development and maintenance of Kafka-based infrastructure and backend services used by multiple engineering teams and business functions across the company.

You will join a team of engineers focused on building reliable, scalable, and maintainable solutions using Java and Kotlin. The team works on active development projects, regularly building new services and integrations from scratch while collaborating closely with teams across engineering, finance, legal, sales, and other business domains.

This role combines backend engineering, distributed systems, and infrastructure-focused development in an environment where you can expand your knowledge of Kafka, data processing, and large-scale system design.

What you'll do

Develop and maintain backend services and internal tooling using Java, Kotlin, and Spring

Build services responsible for producing, consuming, processing, and transferring data through Kafka

Contribute to the reliability, scalability, and operational health of Kafka clusters and supporting infrastructure

Work with Kafka Connect and integrations between Kafka and different data stores

Troubleshoot production issues, monitor system behavior, and participate in support rotations

Collaborate with engineering teams and stakeholders across the company to design reliable and maintainable solutions

Participate in code reviews, testing, sprint planning, refinements, and retrospectives within a Scrum environment

Contribute to new projects and platform improvements in a team that regularly develops services and solutions from the ground up

What makes you a strong fit

At least 2 years of experience in backend software engineering

Experience with Java or Kotlin and understanding of object-oriented programming principles

Understanding of RESTful services and backend application architecture

Basic understanding of SQL and relational databases

Understanding of data structures, algorithms, and concurrent applications

Analytical and problem-solving mindset with willingness to investigate complex technical issues

Interest in distributed systems, event-driven architecture, and large-scale platforms

Comfortable collaborating with different engineering teams and stakeholders

Fluent in English, both spoken and written

Nice-to-have qualifications

Experience with Spring or Spring Boot

Practical experience with Apache Kafka or Kafka Connect

Understanding of relational and non-relational databases such as PostgreSQL or MS SQL Server

Experience with CI/CD and development tools such as Maven, Git, or Jenkins

Familiarity with Docker and Kubernetes

Experience with monitoring and observability tools such as Grafana, Prometheus, or Graylog

Familiarity with Scrum or other agile development practices

Interest in learning new technologies and improving engineering practices

Familiarity with agentic AI, MCP (Model Context Protocol), or similar AI technologies
