Summary
About the Position: This is a Medical Support Assistant (Office Automation) GS-0679-04/05 position located at Naval Health Clinic Charleston in Charleston, South Carolina. This is a Direct Hire Authority (DHA) solicitation utilizing the DHA for Certain Personnel of the DoD to recruit and appoint qualified candidates to positions in the competitive service.
Duties
- Perform the full range of receptionist, recordkeeping and miscellaneous clerical duties.
- Complete request forms, manually or automated, for individual patient orders, blood work and other requests.
- Schedule appropriate patient care appointments.
- Receive patients and visitors as the initial point of contact, in person or telephonically.
- Type routine correspondence, progress reports, medical statements, memoranda and statistical reports using various automation systems and programs.
- Perform Quality Assurance monitoring, using appropriate tools regarding the completion and contents of the patients’ record.
- Monitor and manage the messaging system at the clinic/practice level.
- Provide information regarding the practice, clinic, and hospital policies, procedures, and locations to patients, family members, staff, etc.
- Maintain all patients' records, both electronic and paper, according to regulation ensuring each entry contains proper patient and health care provider identification.

Who May Apply: US Citizens In order to qualify, you must meet the education and/or experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience; if qualifying based on education, your transcripts will be required as part of your application. Additional information about transcripts is in this document. Developmental/multi-graded: Management may select at any of the grade levels announced. Duties described reflect the full performance GS-05 level. Duties will be performed in a developmental capacity under close supervision. This recruitment provides promotion opportunity to the target grade of the position without further competition when selectee is eligible and recommended by management. To qualify for the GS-04: General Experience: One year of general experience. General experience is progressively responsible clerical, office, or other work that indicates ability to acquire the particular knowledge and skills needed to perform the duties of the position to be filled, such as, performing receptionist and clerical duties, including greeting visitors, answering and directing phone calls, organizing and maintaining basic files, and using office automation systems to support daily administrative operations. OR Education: Two years of education above the high school level obtained in an accredited business, secretarial or technical school, junior college, college or university. OR Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide your semester hours of by 60. Add the two percentages. To qualify for the GS-05: Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes performing clerical or reception duties; receiving patients in person or telephonically; and entering patient data into an automated system. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-04). OR Education: Four years of education above the high school level obtained in an accredited business, secretarial or technical school, junior college, college or university. OR Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide your semester hours of education beyond two years (total semester hours minus 60) by 60. Add the two percentages. Proficiency Required: This position requires a qualified typist. A qualified typist can type 40 words per minute based on a 5 minute sample with three or fewer errors.
