For our location in Hamburg we are seeking:

# PhD Student for the ATLAS Group

### Limited: 3 Years | Starting date: earliest possible | ID: FHDO019/2026 | Deadline: open | Full-time/Part-time | Remote work possible

DESY, with more than 2900 employees at its two locations in Hamburg and Zeuthen, is one of the world's leading research centres. Its research focuses on decoding the structure and function of matter, from the smallest particles of the universe to the building blocks of life. In this way, DESY contributes to solving the major questions and urgent challenges facing science, society and industry. With its ultramodern research infrastructure, its interdisciplinary research platforms and its international networks, DESY offers a highly attractive working environment in the fields of science, technology and administration as well as for the education of highly qualified young scientists.

The particle physics programme of DESY includes strong contributions to the LHC experiments at CERN and the preparation of future experiments. The experimental programme is enhanced by collaboration with a strong theory group. The DESY ATLAS group is involved in data analyses focusing on W and Z production, Higgs, top quark and Beyond Standard Model physics. In addition, the group is involved in the operation of the ATLAS detector and developments for future upgrades, such as the ATLAS silicon strip tracker for the High Luminosity LHC. A new Emmy Noether group within the ATLAS group will be addressing limitations to the measurement of total Higgs boson decay rates by scrutinising some of the foundational assumptions underlying these measurements and identifying areas where these assumptions can be reevaluated or relaxed. We are hiring a PhD candidate to work on aspects of this project.

## About your role:

  • Higgs boson width determination using H->ZZ events using ATLAS data
  • Tests of the stability of the results with respect to various assumptions in the measurement
  • Effective field theory (EFT) interpretations
  • Study of electron shower shape development in the ATLAS detector (authorship qualification)

## About you:

  • Master in physics, including courses on experimental particle physics
  • Experience in data analysis
  • Experience in programming (preferably C++ or Python)
  • Team-working ability
  • Very good English language skills

## Good reasons to join:

Look forward to a unique working environment on our international research campus. Respectful cooperation and the well-being of our DESY employees are particularly important to us.
