Summary

This position is with the U. S. Department of Labor, Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), within the Directorate of Standards and Guidance. This position is at the full performance level. This position is inside the bargaining unit. This position is NOT remote. Selectee will be expected to report to a Department of Labor (DOL) office in either Gulfport, MS, Boise, ID, or Washington, DC.

Duties

Duties for the Research Health Science Specialist include, but are not limited to the following: Investigating a broad range of areas such as occupational infection control, occupational epidemiology, toxicology, biology, biostatistics and industrial hygiene. Reviewing and evaluating comments and evidence submitted in response to Requests For Information, proposed rules, and other stakeholder engagement. Developing proposed and final regulatory text and supporting analyses for safety and health standards. Participating in interagency committees to represent OSHA and workplace safety and health issues. Developing written guidance documents to assist employers and employees in understanding the provisions of new or current standards or hazards.

Qualifications

This position has an Individual Occupational Requirement. You must meet both the Basic Requirements and the Specialized Experience to qualify for a Health Scientist position, as described in the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Qualification Standards for General Schedule Positions, General Health Science Series, 0601 General Medical and Healthcare positions.https://www.opm.gov/policy-data-oversight/classification-qualifications/general-schedule-qualification-standards/0600/general-health-science-series-0601/ Basic Requirement: Bachelor's or graduate/higher level degree: major study in an academic field related to the medical field, health sciences or allied sciences appropriate to the work of the position. This degree must be from an educational program from an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education(external link) at the time the degree was obtained. All applicants are required to submit transcripts to be considered for this position. AND Specialized Experience is the experience that equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities (KSA's) to perform the duties of the position successfully, and that is typically in or related to the position to be filled. To be creditable, specialized experience must have been equivalent to at least the next lower grade level. Applicants must have 52 weeks of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level, GS-12 in the Federal Service. For the GS-13: Experience in occupational injury and illness prevention and industrial hygiene to include: Conducting studies and analysis to assess occupational hazards; Performing occupational health surveillance for injuries and illnesses; Developing personal protective equipment and control recommendations for occupational hazards; and Developing regulatory solutions to protect workers from occupational hazards.
