The Sales & Use Tax Analyst will support the Company's indirect tax function with a primary focus on sales and use tax audits within the tax technology team. This role will work closely with tax, accounting, procurement, accounts payable, information technology, and operational teams to ensure compliance with state and local tax regulations while minimizing audit exposure and supporting process improvement initiatives.
The ideal candidate will have 2-5 years of indirect tax experience with significant exposure to sales and use tax audits. Experience with tax technology, data analytics, and large-volume transaction analysis is highly desirable. Sales and Use Tax Compliance experience is also a plus. This position offers an opportunity to work within a complex, multi-state retail environment and participate in strategic tax technology initiatives.
KEY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITES:
Facilitate all phases of state and local sales and use tax audits, including audit kickoff meetings, information gathering, data extraction, audit sample review, audit workpaper preparation, and audit resolution
Analyze auditor requests and prepared detailed responses and supporting documentation
Review audit findings, identify opportunities to reduce assessments, and assist with negotiations, protests, appeals, and refund opportunities
Coordinate with internal departments to obtain supporting documentation and ensure timely audit responses
Maintain audit workpapers, documentation, and audit tracking schedules
Identify recurring audit issues and recommend process improvements to reduce future tax risk
Research and interpret state and local sales, use, gross receipts, excise, and other indirect tax laws
Provide guidance regarding the taxability of purchases, services, fixed assets, and operational transactions
Review tax account reconciliations and identify variances requiring investigation
Assist with exemption certificate management and documentation
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
EDUCATION: Bachelors/4 Yr Degree
YEARS OF RELEVANT WORK EXPERIENCE: 3+ years
YEARS OF MANAGEMENT EXPERIENCE: NA
CERTIFICATIONS / LICENSES: Master's degree and/or CMI strongly preferred
SPECIFIC KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS:
Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, Tax, Economics, Business Administration, or related field preferred
Ability to effectively communicate impact of complex indirect tax statutes, regulations, rulings, etc. to key tax and non-tax personnel
2-5 years of indirect tax experience with strong emphasis on sales and use tax audits preferred
Tax Compliance and data preparation experience is a plus, but not required
Exposure to multiple indirect tax types, including sales/use tax, gross receipts tax, GST/PST, excise tax
Indirect tax determination & related systems experience (OneSource preferred)
Strong Microsoft Excel skills. Alteryx experience or other data management systems also a plus
Strong technical research skills, preferably experienced with transaction tax tools (CCH, Checkpoint, TTR)
Ability to handle a variety of projects and responsibilities (multi-task)
Well organized, reliable and action oriented in order to maintain and update the audit status tracker and progress audits to closure
